This is a great book if your just getting into business, however if you already know the basics you may want to try something a little deeper. There are quite a few questions this book just won't answer so make sure you go to class. As a supplement to in class lectures and hands on study you will be able to gain alot from reading this text. It offers alot of valuable information in an easy to understand format. I hope you like reading though because it tends to get a little dry.

If you're a numerical analyst or an engineer interested in the basic theory of the finite element method, this book belongs on your shelf. If you have no interest in finite elements but enjoy well written mathematical literature, this book still belongs on your shelf. Though some sections are dated, the contents of this book remain a solid foundation for understanding the behavior of finite element techniques in theory and in practice. Furthermore, while the contents are mathematically rigorous, the authors largely avoid the theorem/lemma/proof of most mathematical books, and instead describe the analysis in an almost conversational tone. Reading Strang and Fix reminds me of reading Lanczos: the book is dense with ideas which are both mathematically and practically interesting, but the presentation is so smooth that one can almost read it as one reads a novel. --David S. About the Author
Gilbert Strang is a Professor of Mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, of the University of Oxford, UK. His current research interests include linear algebra, wavelets and filter banks, applied mathematics, and engineering mathematics. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks and has published a monograph with George Fix titled An Analysis of the Finite Element Method. Professor Strang served as SIAM s president from 1999-2000, chaired the US National Committee on Mathematics from 2003 2004, and won the Neumann Medal of the US Association of Computational Mechanics in 2005. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Difficult but important historical book on numerical analysis for FEM

This is one of the earliest books on the mathematics of the Finite Element Method (FEM).
The book assumes that you already have knowledge of FEM. It is intended for mathematicians who need to know the numercial analysis details. I would not recommend it to non-mathematicians. You will not learn about implementation or use of FEM from this book.

About the Author
Jesper Christensen is a Senior Research Fellow at Coventry University, and holds a PhD in Structural Optimisation, an MSc in Design of Mechanical Systems as well as a BSc in Industrial Engineering. Prior to his engineering degrees Jesper completed an apprenticeship as an engine fitter working with large marine propulsion systems. His entire academic career has predominately focused on structural optimisation; with a particular emphasis on topology optimisation. Jesper joined Coventry University in 2010; working on the £29m Low Carbon Vehicle Technology Project (LCVTP), developing topology optimisation algorithms for lightweight vehicle structures. Following the LCVTP his focus turned to the continued development of the Mechanical Engineering MSc course at Coventry University; taking over the course leadership. In this context he primarily focused on aspects such as FE theory and application, strain gauging, metal fatigue and optimisation principles. Jesper’s research activities has continued through a number of PhD students as well as a number of successful project grants, including a £780k Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (ESPSRC) research grant focusing on multiphysics simulation and optimisation, as well as a £1.6m grant for industrial based research and development project focusing on development, implementation and optimisation of a Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) for commercial bus applications.
Jesper is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), as well as being a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Ambassador; inspiring children and young adults to take up degrees and careers in STEM related areas.

Christophe Bastien is a Principal Lecturer in Engineering Simulations at Coventry University and holds a PhD in vehicle safety and biomechanics. He led the university’s Mechanical and Automotive Engineering MSc courses and taught Finite Element Analysis and crashworthiness simulations. He is also a chartered engineer from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
Christophe has 13 years’ industrial experience in crashworthiness, testing and computer simulation. During this time, he has successfully led the design, testing and computational analysis of the Jaguar ‘X-Type’ for interior head injuries (FMVSS201), as well as the development and analysis of the first pedestrian deployable pyrotechnic bonnet for the Jaguar ‘XK’. Later on, during his employment at Corus Automotive, he developed further static pedestrian bonnet technologies, as well as engineered, analyzed and tested highway crash barriers for high speed vehicle containment.
He joined Coventry University in 2007 and started his research in vehicle lightweighting optimisation, which included the design work for Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) in the Premium Lightweight Architecture for Carbon Efficient Seating (PLACES) project, the optimisation of lightweight electric vehicle architectures for the £29m Low Carbon Vehicle Technology Project (LCVTP) and the multi-disciplinary / multiphysics optimisation of Virtual Exhaust Systems (VexPro).
Christophe Bastien is a member of the Coventry University’s Mobility & Transport Research Centre, where he is focusing on Automotive Safety, Lightweighting, Optimisation and Human Trauma Predictions. He holds 19 patents in the field of safety engineering.

Neonatologist and clinical neuroscientist Pape argues that treatments for children with early damage to the brain, nerves, or spinal cord have not been ambitious enough. Her goal is "a cure for some, improvement for all." She criticizes the inertia she has observed in medicine that causes many primary care providers to postpone referring patients with cerebral palsy (CP) for treatment until symptoms become "bad enough" to warrant attention. Early intervention, she argues, produces far better results. She criticizes the same inertia for resisting challenges to the disproved yet still common belief that in many cases, rehabilitation is impossible and the best possible outcome is the child's condition failing to worsen. Using personal observations, case studies, and published research, Pape makes a convincing case for a more optimistic prognosis for children with CP. The book reads like an academic text, and the tone is likely too esoteric for general readers, but Pape's descriptions of a variety of treatments may provide useful updates for medical professionals, and the whole book will be interesting to parents and caregivers of children with cerebral palsy. About the Author

Karen Pape, MD, FRCPC, is a neonatologist and clinical neuroscientist. As a medical innovator, she is challenging the system to raise expectations for babies born with early brain and nerve injury. She was a neonatologist and director of the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic at Toronto’s renowned Hospital for Sick Children, with an additional research fellowship in Neonatal Pathology and Ultrasound Brain Scans in London, England. She co-authored a book on baby brain pathology and was instrumental in the development of neonatal ultrasound brain scanning, now used in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Pape then directed work at the Magee Clinic in Toronto, developing a new, personalized approach to children and adults with early onset brain or nerve damage. She has lectured widely and conducted over 200 training workshops and conferences for parents, therapists, and physicians throughout North America and internationally in 12 countries. Dr. Pape lives in Toronto, Canada.

LIfe altering in so many positive ways

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this and I read from cover to cover without putting it down while our son was receiving therapy at a great centre who practice what Dr Pape has learned. What Dr Pape does for families of CP kids and adults is to think outside the square and show us that what we have options. The changes we have put in for our son are getting real results and we have been lucky enough to experience many changes in him and some within a day and we will continue to work on him to get him the best recovery. "Habit hides recovery" is a key concept and I would urge any parent of a CP kid to take this book and look for therapists that are willing to work with that in mind. Dr Pape is truly an revolutionary for not accepting the norm and looking at options. The day I stumbled onto a Ted talk of her's last year was truly the most life altering event for our 9 year old son, I cannot recommend this book and Dr Pape's work highly enough.

A must read! I could not put this book down. Dr. Pape takes a refreshing yet very informative approach to explaining neuroplasticity, and how the brain CAN recover from traumatic brain injury. She shares many powerful stories from her real world experience as a leading neonatologist and neuroscientist, and gives tremendous insight as to what can be done to assist the brain with healing. Dr. Pape also has a positively unique take on hope; something that is not frequently seen or offered in the arena. I highly recommend all special needs parents, physical therapists, occupational therapists, neonatologists, neurologists, teachers, EA's, and pediatritians to read this book. Thank you Dr. Pape for this incredible page turner!
