Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function, by Nancy Craig, Rachel Green, Carol Greider, Gisela Storz, Cynthia Wolberger, Orna Cohen

The biological world operates on a multitude of scales - from molecules to tissues to organisms to ecosystems. Throughout these myriad levels runs a common thread: the communication and onward passage of information, from cell to cell, from organism to organism and ultimately, from generation to generation. But how does this information come alive to govern the processes that constitute life? The answer lies in the molecular components that cooperate through a series of carefully-regulated processes to bring the information in our genome to life. These components and processes lie at the heart of one of the most fascinating subjects to engage the minds of scientists today: molecular biology.

Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function, Second Edition, offers a fresh approach to the teaching of molecular biology by focusing on the commonalities that exist between the three kingdoms of life, and discussing the differences between the three kingdoms to offer instructive insights into molecular processes and components. This gives students an accurate depiction of our current understanding of the conserved nature of molecular biology, and the differences that underpin biological diversity. Additionally, an integrated approach demonstrates how certain molecular phenomena have diverse impacts on genome function by presenting them as themes that recur throughout the book, rather than as artificially separated topics

As an experimental science, molecular biology requires an appreciation for the approaches taken to yield the information from which concepts and principles are deduced. Experimental Approach panels throughout the text describe research that has been particularly valuable in elucidating difference aspects of molecular biology. Each panel is carefully cross-referenced to the discussion of key molecular biology tools and techniques, which are presented in a dedicated chapter at the end of the book. Molecular Biology further enriches the learning experience with full-color artwork, end-of-chapter questions and summaries, suggested further readings grouped by topic, and an extensive glossary of key terms.

Features:
A focus on the underlying principles of molecular biology equips students with a robust conceptual framework on which to build their knowledge
An emphasis on their commonalities reflects the processes and components that exist between bacteria, archae, and eukaryotes
Experimental Approach panels demonstrate the importance of experimental evidence by describing research that has been particularly valuable in the field

Review
Review from previous edition While I rarely make textbooks the core of my teaching material, the general presentation of material and interleaving of research results and methods is very similar to my preferred teaching strategy. That is what led me to adopt this remarkable textbook for use in my class. Richard S. Myers, University of Miami I believe the strengths of the text are the organization and layout, with simple diagrams & headings that make mental organization easier for the students. Julia Frugoli, Clemson University I am delighted with Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function. It explains material extremely well. It has a nice balance of detail and focus on understanding the overall process. It is fantastically up to date. Barbara C. Hoopes, Colgate University - Hamilton, NY I would highly recommend this book to any colleague who was considering instituting a basic class in molecular biology. Andrew J. Andres, University of Nevada - Las Vegas

An awesome "central dogma" book.
By Gavin Scott
I'm comparing this book (MB) to Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBoC), which is probably my favorite textbook of all time.

This one (MB) is not as much of a general cell biology book as it primarily covers only the elements of the so-called "central dogma" of molecular biology. DNA replication and transcription into RNA, and RNA translation into protein, plus all the regulatory aspects of those processes (as well as chapters on the cell cycle, DNA repair, transposable elements, and genomics), unlike MBoC which spends more or less the first half of the book on those topics and then devotes the second half to the further biology of the Cell, covering things like membranes, energy conversion, cell signalling, cancer, and the immune system.

Both books do a good job of introducing the Biochemistry you need in order to understand what follows. MB has a great first chapter that gives an overview of the book (basically "Molecular Biology in 30 pages").

Where MB shines though is in its more in-depth coverage of the topics it touches on. It devotes about twice as many pages to these topics as the current edition of MBoC does. MB is also wonderfully illustrated and does a good job of visually explaining things. MB contains lots of "experimental" panels that talk about how various aspects of the cell were discovered.

Both books include chapters on techniques for manipulating the genetic material in cells. I thought the current edition of MBoC felt slightly more up to date, but both books are very current editions with a good overview of the current state of the art.

Both books are quite readable. I would give the edge to MBoC here in terms of ease of reading as MB seems just a bit denser to me. But both are very easily understandable.

I can highly recommend this book (MB) to anyone looking for an in-depth coverage of the central themes of molecular biology (how DNA and genes work). It goes pretty deep for a first course, but it does not presume much of any background knowledge so it would be an appropriate book to introduce someone to the subject who wants to understand things very thoroughly.

If I had to choose only one or the other I'd still prefer the new MBoC edition due to its much broader coverage of cell biology (it's also 50% larger and twice as expensive though), but this one is really excellent at what it covers. I bought it after previewing the "Look Inside" pages and I have not been disappointed.

If the mechanics of the functioning of cells interests you then you'll probably be fascinated and really enjoy the depth of knowledge you gain from this book, and it's something you'll want to keep and probably use frequently as a reference if you progress further in the study of biology. If you find the details tedious, then this one might be more depth than you want, and something like Essential Cell Biology, 4th Edition might serve you better.

Currently this book is not available as a Kindle "Print Replica" e-textbook yet, where the other titles mentioned here are.

Really happy with the book, easily a 5+ star experience.

Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points
By Suzanne Jacobs
Though review of genome function to include current available information re: RNAi, CRISPR, etc. Excellent illustrations/case studies to help clarify more difficult points. Excellent terminology and index. Will be kept as reference for anticipated studies with the understanding that information changes and expands daily but the basic information will remain the same.

Grade 3-6-In these picture books, twins Josh and Emma Binkerton and their younger sister Libby are transported back in time after opening a travel guide about a specific historical period at the creepy, ramshackle Good Times Travel Agency, and the only way to get home is to read the book cover to cover. Each page features the siblings' ongoing story, cartoonlike illustrations with dialogue balloons, and yellowed guidebook pages that provide basic background information about the period. The stories are full of slapstick, but hold together well and involve readers. Though the plots are contrived to tie into the guidebooks, they don't seem forced and the flow is good. The guides are written in a breezy style, paying just enough attention to the grosser aspects of each civilization to help maintain interest. Slavin's sunny pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are packed with details. Kids are sure to devour these lively books.

Gr. 2-5. In this first book in the Good Times Travel Agency series, which depends heavily on cartoon illustrations, the Binkerton twins, Josh and Emma, and little sister Libby stumble into a peculiar travel agency. The strange owner encourages the children to peruse his dusty, old travel guides, and no sooner does Josh open a book about ancient Egypt than the three children are transported back in time. It's 2500 B.C, and they're knee-deep in the Nile, with no chance of returning home until they've read every word of the book. A variety of adventures ensues, including encounters with crocodiles, tomb robbers, and angry soldiers. Bailey delivers not only a fast-paced story but also a fun way to convey information about Egyptian lifestyles, religion, and schools, and, of course, the pyramids and mummies. The busy cartoon illustrations support both the fiction and the facts. Shelley Townsend-Hudson

The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic MangaGengoroh Tagame

Violent, visceral and provocative, to say the least, Gengoroh Tagame's unquestionable talent for story and illustration is already the stuff of legend. His gay BDSM stories are now widely celebrated for both their virtuosic drawing and their unparalleled passion. Produced by a veteran Japanist--Anne Ishii--The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame is a project that began some years ago, when Ishii was translating Chip Kidd's personal Tagame collection and decided to reach out to him. Inspired by filmmaker Graham Kolbeins' online work with gay comics, the project took on new ambitious proportions, materializing in this exciting celebration of one of the world's most poignant erotic artists. This hefty Tagame omnibus includes ten English editions of short stories dating from the late 1990s to 2012. The newest work is an original story commissioned by Kidd himself: Tagame's very first foray into writing directly for an American reader. Celebrated novelist and biographer Edmund White contributes an introduction to the volume.
Gengoroh Tagame (born 1964) is a legend in gay comics throughout the world and in the American underground, where loyal fans have quietly shared foreign-language editions of his groundbreaking work in the outermost edges of bondage and pornography. Beyond the comic book format, Tagame's original artwork has been exhibited internationally and paired with the works of Tom of Finland. Tagame was also the founding Editor and Art Director of Japan's most widely circulated gay journal, G-Men.

THE PASSION AND THE PAIN: BDSM ELEVATED TO ART
By Allen Smalling
THE PASSION OF GENGORAH TAGAME: MASTER OF GAY EROTIC MANGA is a publishing event -- the first *bara manga* book of his stories legally translated into English for the North American market. *Bara* is a loan word derived from the English word "bear," and "bara manga" are a type of "gei comi" -- gay comics. The author, Gengoroh Tagame (b. 1964) is undoubtedly Japan's best known gay *mangaka* or gay manga artist and, per Wikipedia, has been supporting himself as such since 1994. His manga output ranges all the way from brief stories to full-fledged graphic novels. Male-on-male Japanese erotic comics are far from unknown to North American audiences, of course, but typically they're the "yaoi" boy-on-boy liaison featuring smooth, slight, almost epicene adolescents in detective or pursuit-type adventures; it's barely bromantic. "Twink" vs. "bear" in American homoeroticism does not come close to the dichotomy posed by Tagame's BDSM characters, who resemble an entirely different species from the yaoi boys: mature, hairy, hunky, tall or a bit bearish, heavily masculine or hypermasculine, and capable of great suffering as well as great physical feats; one feels that a simple lift of those massive eyebrows could clear any high school in any urban prefecture. Women and children are all but absent from Tagame's work; typically, the plot sends his men into hardcore or sadomasochistic situations in which little is left to the imagination visually or verbally: erection, penetration and orgasm are rendered in great close-up detail, as is verbal abuse, often coupled with violent and frequently unsettling scenes of physical torture, bondage, confinement and humiliation.

With such over-the-top explicitness, Tagame's work may break more "pornish" than that of his fellow gay-manga artists, but it would be unfair nonetheless to stigmatize it as the sexual ghettoization we call "pornography." Many of the best-known of the U.S. gay hardcore comics deal in the taboo theme of father-son incest; the multivolume MY WILD AND RAUNCHY SON is impressive, but all on that note. Similarly, practically all of the stories from the author known as Julius involve being bedded by Papa, symbolically if not actually. These are serial comics, not graphic novels. The artistic term "erotic," while vastly underestimating the pain and violence in Tagame's stories, at least permits some understanding that thematic complexity and character development are possible. It also carries an implicit nod at the quality of the artwork, which incorporates elements of conventional comic and graphic-novel artistry, noirish "tough guy" portrayals, and for all that an emphatic, honest quality reminiscent of Japanese woodcuts. Author/savant/esthete Edmund White, in his page-length introduction to this book, struggled mightily to parse all the influences. It's worth reading. Perhaps it's the different locus of religion in Japan, where Judaeo-Christian notions of sexual guilt do not hold sway as they do here, that makes the picturing of male orgasm not the guilty pleasure it is for us. The typical American porno "vid" (even if three vids are strung together into a mock feature-length movie) is transactional as to sex: for every Top there's a Bottom and if any "flipping" is to take place, we're usually warned of that ahead of time lest an unscheduled rupture in the homoerotics upset the paying public. (Even in the relatively hardcore machine-shop and bukkake variations the designated bottom seems all too happy to ingest whatever gets sent his way.)

[*This graf is by way of Background*: But sexuality in Tagame's work is less transactional than transformational. This comes across very clearly in his masterwork, the astonishing three-volume PRIDE (2004), at this point available in the USA only in very expensive Japanese-language imports or the Internet samizdat called "scanlation": computer-scanned piracy in which the original language is computer-whitened out and replaced by English translation of varying quality. By contemporary standards, PRIDE's protagonist ought to be the happiest homosexual in Honshu: a handsome and hunky Top's Top, a college literature student with plenty of free time and a butch bachelor pad, he inhabits a modern, Americanized conception of "gay," with all the resources of modern urban culture at hand -- personal ads, Craigslist-style online self-promotions, the local leather bar, sex club and cruisy public park, and adroit use of the telephone-answering machine to screen, sort and prioritize future bedmates. Yet the more he consumes, the less he is satiated - the more freedom he enjoys, he more restricted he feels - the more on his plate, the hungrier he gets. Redoubling his efforts only gets him soft in a hurry. One day, after class, he is summoned to the private office of a tweedy older professor from a different department, who has seen the young man in the local park. The professor turns out to be as intuitive as he is sadistic. He explains to the student in no uncertain terms that his arrogance and so-called pride are impediments to his true self. The teacher restrains the youth and chastises him verbally and physically, during which process the young man gets and stays hard (an enduring litmus test for latent Masochism), a physical fact which the teacher points out with deep and knowing satisfaction. The two begin a mentor/protégée, master/slave relationship; the former young Top is on the way to becoming (as a friend says of him) "a hardcore M." The seminal (so to speak) point to be made is that even though both characters get off, the master "granting" this privilege to his slave, these are not the "money shots" of American transactional video porn that ring down the curtain . . . in PRIDE, and in most Tagame stories, the plot continues. The sex, for all its impact, is punctuation leading to character development and transformation on the part of the student. It's almost as though the Marquis de Sade's "Justine" had been rewritten for contemporary gay Japan, and like de Sade's title character each successive wave of humiliation (an assault on his Pride or her Virtue) is slightly mitigated for us (the audience) by the humor that occurs after each successive humiliation, because we know that the victim is getting just what s/he needs, despite protestations. For Tagame, fulfillment comes only from self-knowledge through hard and painful struggle.**]

It is useful to keep in mind this theme of an almost Nietzschean struggle leading to betterment through motifs of heavy kink. It is visible even in embryo in the last and shortest narrative of THE PASSION OF GENGOROH TAGAME, "Class Act," the only story specifically commissioned for this volume by editor Chip Kidd. Almost a précis of the first book of the multivolume PRIDE, in "Class Act" a teacher breaks out the cane because a student's paper is a day overdue(!). Then the student -- quite disingenuously, it turns out -- e-mails the teacher an inappropriate paper to provoke another confrontation. Transformation is accompanied by mutation in this book's longest story, 2000's "Arena," in which Tagame wittily posits a future society that has gone from professional boxing to mixed-martial arts toward competitive sexuality. The protagonist is a grizzled and cynical arena fighter who, upon traveling from Japan to the USA to compete in an "ultra private" exhibition, is given an experimental vaccine (in de Sade's day, perhaps a magic amulet?) to ramp up his general machismo. It works -- on his studliness -- and he becomes a kind of overenhanced sex monster, pitted against some fearsome-looking Caucasians, one of whom is almost a caricature of Jesse Ventura. Instead of chanting "Go! Go! Go!" the spectators shout the F-word as encouragement. "Arena" is not only the longest story in the collection, it's also the most visually dense and definitely the most violent, gruesome at times, though the satirical aspect of the sci-fi takes the edge off a little. Have the sophisticated French been softened up by de Sade? "Arena" has already been legally translated into French, along with several other Tagame stories. But this is not to say that Tagame's stuff is relentlessly serious. In "Hairy Oracle," the sex is anal but the plot is mental -- a career detective, frustrated over his inability to figure out a difficult case, submits himself to the ministrations of a male prostitute and breakthroughs occur. In "Country Doctor" (which opera buffs may find reminiscent of Benjamin Britten's PETER GRIMES), set in a remote Japanese village, a novice physician from Tokyo gets it on with a cheerful working-class chub, then with a randy high-schooler, then with an experienced elderly patient complete with tied-up slave whom he walks in on by accident. Of this last incident, the Mayor gets a peek -- and the Mayor just happens to be the local Shinto priest. Before long an ancient ritual is unearthed and the young doctor becomes the community "bride" by joyously "marrying" a symbolic wooden phallus in full view of all the town's assembled adult males (no kids, no women, but Tagame is politically astute enough to tell us the women have their own ceremony, too). The story ends with the doctor explaining by phone to his parents that he's too busy to make it home for the holidays, while the pictorial reveals just why. In an afterword, Tagame admits that the anal initiation ritual is more his creation than precedent out of Shinto. He is quite right, though, that guilt over same-sex relations is largely a Western importation.

So would I recommend THE PASSION OF GENGOROH TAGAME? Absolutely. Act now and you can be the first kid on the block to own this breakthrough translation, and at a discount. This volume was printed in Canada and is of very good physical quality -- pretty much a B&W paperback art book of 271 pages. If I had a criticism of the product, it would not be that all the stories except one are reprints of earlier works (that's what an anthology is, after all) but that a type of "anthology-itis" creeps in nonetheless in that we are given a wide variety of stuff -- not necessarily Tagame's very best stuff (though I consider "Arena" among the best) -- instead, a mix intended to highlight the artist's versatility and fit a format. I for one wish they had included even half a chapter from a recognized longer masterwork like PRIDE, or perhaps the graphic "novellas" GUNJI or GOKU. I do hope THE PASSION OF GENGOROH TAGAME succeeds; it certainly deserves to. Then perhaps the magic of the market will start giving us further and legal translations of more Tagame work.

Fascinating factoid: In manga, sexual situations are often accompanied by this symbol: 7". No, it doesn't mean what it does here - Japan is on the metric system. Just a fun coincidence.

Gay sex with several twists
By Nicky d'
There are many Japanese gay manga artists. Until now, I've had to read them online to read any in English, and some of the translations are a little odd. Some are almost unintelligible. Takeishi Matsu is my favorite because I like romance and happy endings with my sex. You might get a little romance out of Gengoroh Tagame, you might even get an occasional happy ending (of some sort), but you sure as hell are going to get SEX. Tagame's drawings are not as finished as Matsu's but the rougher quality goes with the story lines of bondage, discipline, domination, and s&m. If you've read Tagame online and are worried that some of THOSE stories will be in the book, don't worry that your neighbors on the subway will throw you off the train. The really, really, really hardcore ones aren't in this book. But the ones that are aren't exactly vanilla. You still get the real Tagame, which is pretty damn hot. This is a larger size hardcover, which gives more room for the drawings. The English translation makes sense. Tagame writes notes about the stories and shows a delightful sense of humor. I really like Tagame's work overall, even though some of it turns me off, and I am very happy to have this book in my home library. Comics I enjoy reading over and over. I hope we see more gay manga in English. Takeishi Matsu please!

A Must Buy for Tagame Fans
By J. Dawson
A few of the stories may be familiar to followers of this artist, but this is the first time I've ever seen them translated into English so well. One story was written especially for this volume, and there are several others that were new to me.

Amazon.com Review
"All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." A book for adult readers-aloud to revel in--and it just might teach young listeners to fly. (Ages 5 and older) --Richard Farr

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7-J. M. Barrie's classic tale comes to life in this radio play adaptation. Young listeners will once again be thrilled with the antics of Peter, Wendy, Michael, the Lost Boy, Captain Hook, and Tinkerbell. The voices of the children and adult actors are well suited to the story. There are a few places where the dialogue is a little fuzzy, but overall the audio quality is very clear. Following the original tale closely, this radio play is a refreshing change from traditional books on tape and will provide pleasurable listening for young readers. Teachers may want to use it as anexample for expressive reading and acting techniques. A unique selection to add to audio collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
An unusually large, attractive, unabridged edition with dozens of full-page illustrations and smaller vignettes. In style, Gustafson's lusty oil paintings of the pirates are akin to N. C. Wyeth's, though they have more the flavor of compelling dramatic play than real menace. His slim, round-faced, rosy children and cozy interiors are closer to Wyeth's gifted student, Jessie Wilcox Smith, while the ethereal yet mischievous fairy folk recall Rackham. This is not to suggest that the result is merely derivative, in the manner of Michael Hague; Gustafson is a talented craftsman who skillfully melds his references to past greats to create an appropriately traditional style that has enough of a contemporary aura (especially in the characterizations) for broad popular appeal. An endpaper map of ``The Neverland'' and meticulous renditions of intriguing details add to the drama and fun. A perfect gift for a family that reads aloud. A Neat Package
By theboombody
Hmm...., Peter and Wendy is obviously a five star book all the way, but what about Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens? Well, it's not really a complete book, first off. It's just a large section taken out of an earlier Barrie book titled The Little White Bird. So its very fragmented. Second, since it's more of a springboard the for ideas that formed the Peter Pan play than anything else, it repeats quite a bit of what we have already seen multiple times in many of the famous Peter Pan adaptations.

Even so, I did get a lot of enjoyment out of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Aside from the first chapter (which isn't much fun if you haven't been to the gardens), I was quite entertained. Barrie's theory that people are born as birds and then turn into humans afterward is pretty wild, and I loved Peter's interaction with the girl who was captured by the fairies. Peter thought he played games the same way all real boys did but just embarassed the heck out of himself, throwing the hula-hoops or whatever those things were in the water. Poor guy.

So all in all, you have a great introduction followed by a good book fragment and topped off with an all-time classic. Not a bad purchase at all.

Why Classics are Classics
By theboombody
As one reads Peter Pan, one doesn't have to do much thinking to figure out why its story has achieved such worldwide acclaim. I had ridiculously high expectations of Mr. Barrie's imagination before purchasing this title, and he has fulfilled them completely.

Many parts of the story are nothing but nonsense, which I enjoy above all else. Mr. Darling, the head of the Darling family, commands his children to take their medicine after he hides the medicine he's supposed to take. He brags about how noble he is for drinking a medicine that tastes so much worse that theirs. Unfortunately for him, during his bragging his medicine is found, and the whole family agrees to take their respective medicines on the count of three. Sure enough, when three is reached, everyone except Mr. Darling takes their medicine, and Mr. Darling once again tries to hide his.

This kind of scenario is what I'd call Mark Twain nonsense. You can imagine it being true, even though it's quite high up on the ridiculous scale. Then there's what I would classify as over-the-top nonsense - AKA bull - which there is plenty of in Barrie's original story of Peter Pan. Going back to Mr. Darling, if we take a look at how he's doing near the end of the book, we find him going to and from work in a dog kennel. Ah, yes...grown men in pet taxis. What could be more fun than the "he-didn't-even-try-to-make-this-belivable" silliness of such a scene? To be honest, I don't know if I'd even read books if they all left out fun stuff like this.

Other silly parts of the book involve Wendy growing up a day quicker than most girls; the narrator claiming he hates Mrs. Darling only to call her his favorite character a few sentences later; the lost boys asking Wendy to change the characters her story just two sentences into it; the narrator using the phrase "woke into life" because Peter likes the word "woke" more than "wakened;" and my favorite, Captain Hook using a stale cake as a missle and then falling over it in the dark.

I believe the novel version of Peter Pan was written after the author had already established Peter Pan as a successful play. That may explain a lot about the colorful narration, which takes many, many literary liberties. We see everything from blatant narrator interference with the characters in the story to the shameless attempt at informing the audience that the narrator only chooses to make the events in the story happen a certain way so certain characters in the book won't be disappointed. Perhaps without these wacky (and maybe even insane) traits in the narration, there'd be no reason to read the book, since it would be no different from the play. After reading the Peter Pan novel though, I'd have to say it almost seems criminal to watch an adaptation of Peter Pan without any wacky narration.

Contrary to most adaptations of Peter Pan, the individual lost boys (of where there are six I believe) are actually more developed as characters than John or Michael Darling. Heck, at the end of the book they actually end up moving out of the Neverland to live with the Darlings and grow up to busy themselves in interesting professions.

I may not like the actual land of Neverland as much as I like the land of Oz, but Barrie's narration is unbeatable in my opinion. He could probably make a Jeopardy contestant's Friday night schedule sound exciting.

I believe Barrie has written another Peter Pan book as well, a prequel of sorts entitled "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." It should be interesting, particuarly if it addresses what is contained in the dark dreams that haunt Peter throughout this book. Freud would have a field day with such dreams and the whole mother issue.

The only thing I expected to see in this book that I didn't see was "happy thoughts." That must have been a creation of Disney.

Who Owns the Ice House?: Eight Life Lessons From an Unlikely Entrepreneur, by Clifton Taulbert, Gary Schoeniger

In the late 1950s, Glen Allan, Mississippi, was a poor cotton community. For many, it was a time and place where opportunities were limited by social and legal constraints that were beyond their control. It was a time and place where few dared to dream. Based on his own life experience, Pulitzer nominee Clifton Taulbert has teamed up with entrepreneur thought leader Gary Schoeniger to create a powerful and compelling story that captures the essence of an entrepreneurial mindset and the unlimited opportunities it can provide. Drawing on the entrepreneurial life lessons Taulbert learned from his Uncle Cleve, Who Owns the Ice house? chronicles Taulbert's journey from life in the Mississippi Delta at the height of legal segregation to being recognized by Time magazine as "one of our nation's most outstanding emerging entrepreneurs." Who Owns The Ice House? reaches into the past to remind us of the timeless and universal principles that can empower anyone to succeed.

One Of My Top Enterpreneurial Books of All Time!
By MJohnC
When I can't put a book down, that's when I know I love it; the book wins over all else -- the TV, the football game, the Facebook -- everything is put off until the book is read in its entirety.

This was one of those books.

As an author myself of an entrepreneurial/finance book (The Millionaire Fastlane) I am often asked and approached, what entrepreneur books do I recommend? Sadly, my list is few because most entrepreneur books are written by authors first, entrepreneurs second. Most entrepreneur books are simply full of "feel-good" self-important BS platitudes that do nothing but promote a false reality of entrepreneurship and what it takes to succeed in entrepreneurship.

Who Owns the Ice House puts all the critical "success" factors into perspective, and tells it from a gripping perspective that shows you, if Clifton can do it, there's no way in hell you shouldn't be to do it!

Unfortunately, as I read the book I became acutely aware that it probably wouldn't sell a lot of books simply because the content is NOT what people want to hear: The cold-hard truth behind what it takes to succeed in entrepreneurship is a firm commitment to your customer and hard work (NOT 4-hour work weeks, NOT outsourcing, NOT "do what you love", NOT "follow your passion"). Solve needs. Fix problems. Always put the customer first. Your personal motivations in the entrepreneurial transaction become irrelevant and the story of Clifton Talbert shows the positive result of that commitment. Nowadays, books like this (ones that hit the nail on the head) are passed over for the stuff that people WANT to hear (You can make millions "following your passion" and working 10 hours a week from your basement! Blah Blah) ... don't pass on this book, I'm glad I didn't.

The mindset we need to rebuild an economic future worth living.
By Thom Ruhe
Full Disclosure: We (Kauffman Foundation) funded the creation of this powerful book and companion course.

Recognizing our nation's need for greater economic participation at all levels of society, the Icehouse Entrepreneurship Program captures and conveys the "mindset" of entrepreneurs who overcame adversity and are now helping lead our economic recovery.

The program consists of this great book that shares timeless lessons from the life experiences of Clifton Taulbert (successful entrepreneur and acclaimed author) while growing up in the Jim Crow South. Under the watchful and mentoring eye of his Uncle Cleve Morman, an unlikely entrepreneur, Taulbert experienced the power entrepreneurship has to overcome adversity while making a better future for oneself and their community.

The second part of the program is the online companion course that expands on the eight life lessons in a way that is relevant today by sharing the stories of modern day examples of Uncle Cleve who likewise overcame adversity in their own lives by embracing an entrepreneurial mindset and embodying these values. The course brings to life the importance of having an Icehouse (entrepreneurial) mentality that can lead to financial independence for individuals while furthering the economic recovery for our nation.

The Icehouse Entrepreneurship Program is a timely reminder of the ability of entrepreneurship to empower ordinary people to do extraordinary things, while reminding us that building new companies and creating new jobs will lead to a brighter future and a stronger nation.

Best Book for Entrepreneurs
By Kip Marlow
Once in a long while you come across a book that actually teaches something. "Ice House" is one of those rare and timeless books. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Entrepreneurship is much more than balance sheets, and business plans. It's about the intangibles that create success. As an experienced entrepreneur, I can recommend "Ice House" for any current business owner as well as someone wishing to start a business. This book is so good, it should be read more than once, and kept on your back table as a continuous reference manual. Kudos to Mr. Taulbert and Mr. Schoeniger for their wisdom and instincts.

Progressive Sight Singing, by Carol Krueger

A comprehensive, student-centered, and flexible introduction to sight singing, Progressive Sight Singing, Second Edition, by Carol Krueger, presents students with the underlying grammar and syntax of musical structure and prepares them to perceive that structure with both the ear and the eye. Working from the premise that students learn musical skills in much the same order as they do language skills, the book trains the ear first--through hearing and imitating patterns--before teaching students to read and write.

Divided into two parts, the text presents rhythmic exercises in Part I and melodic exercises in Part II. The two sections can be used concurrently over a four-semester course sequence, giving instructors the flexibility to teach at a pace that suits the abilities and backgrounds of a particular class or course schedule.

FEATURES

· Adds only one new element per chapter and incorporates components from previous chapters into examples and exercises, continuously reinforcing learned skills

· Integrates a rich variety of well-paced, graduated exercises for classroom study and individual practice outside of class

· Includes an abundance of rhythmic exercises, eliminating the need for a separate rhythm text

· Encourages students to participate actively (sing, chant, write, improvise) in the practice of each concept

· Offers instructors great flexibility in that they can use the tonal and reading systems they prefer; the appendixes provide a brief overview of each system

Comprehensive overview
By Robert Barnett
This book is an exhaustive look at sight-singing. It almost gives too much information, but all the information is relevant to the subject. I recommed this book to anyone who has a general knowledge of music theory and would like to apply a sight-singing technique to increase their musicianship. Many students have a basic understanding of music theory, but have not created an inner ear or inner rhythm. This book shows you how to develop both.

Fantastic book--a MUST!
By Francis L. Mcdougal
I have recently used this book and it is fascinating! Dr. Krueger takes sight singing to a new, comfortable, and well paced level. She believes in training the ear before the reading and writing, instead of throwing multiple ideas at the students. I highly recommend this book for college-level or even high school music students. If you ever have the chance to meet or take a class from Dr. K at the University of South Carolina, DO IT!
