ok book but needs a good editor/ proofreader

There are some good basic tips in this book without a lot of "filler" (which is exactly what she is advocating for your closet! But the typos... the second line in... "where" instead of "wear??" And there were more... very distracting. I would have given this four stars but for that and perhaps that's petty, but not only did it distract from the read, it also (for me, anyway) called into question the credibility of the author.

Great Guideline

This book is a great guideline for building a foundation wardrobe! You start with 16 basics, then add, in your choice of color palette, anything you want!
Simple to read, easy to follow. It even has charts that you can print out or copy!
I really enjoyed this book and it gave me a whole new perspective on building a wardrobe! Good job, Kym Hausmann!

Good basic "how to" with some odd failings

This is a BASIC work book. it is fairly clear and simple "the essentials" and will help someone just getting started in building capsule wardrobe.
there are several good points, which would have had this book at 4 or 5 stars, but several bad points which drag it down.

The PLUS side:
It is a simplified and streamlined method, without a lot of assumptions, about building a capsule work wardrobe starting inside your own closet, with what you have.
The resulting shopping list for things you need will be precise.
the author explains the main reasons why you can have a full closet and nothing to wear (As my image consultant instructor always said, "too much frosting, not enough cake")
the author is building a WORK wardrobe, so the emphasis is on work suitable/office suitable wardrobe, and is not giving you a lot of "party only" advice. this is "office suitable wear".
The author clearly describes the type of clothing they are discussing (simple top , like a t shirt. blouse, can have the following details...)

The NEGATIVES:
the author NEVER explains if the two dark neutrals she suggests you build your wardrobe around, are supposed to go together. (since this is for beginners, this should be explained) as an example she lists several colors of "dark neutral" which could be your two choices, but several of these colors will be hard for a novice to wear together.
in addition , in many cases, your "light neutral" may not go with both dark neutrals if it is not selected carefully. and your accent colors may not go with both dark neutrals.
the author should have spared some page time discussing this. since the book is aimed at "entry level" capsule wardrobe builders.

if your target reader is fashion clueless enough to think visible garter belts are suitable for work... (the author spends time discussing this, despite the fact that garter belts are rare outside the fetish and cosplay community these days)... then they need a lot more basic advice about necklines and color choices.

The "it bugged me, it may not bother you" negatives:
there is no need to use derogatory terms like "slutty" to describe unsuited for office wear clothing. she correctly says "not party wear" in other areas, but uses the short hand "slutty" a lot. frankly it grates. YES you want to avoid "slutty or sloppy, the two S's" at work, as she says... but there are WAY better ways to explain that you neither want to look unprofessional and incapable, nor as though you find your workplace a mere location to hang out on route to the nightclub.

This book needed a proofreader. the typos don't bug me that much but they can be a bit odd.

the checklist in the back is not formatted to be printed, or easily copied. given that its a checklist she refers to as being "for you to use" early on in the book, i would expect it to be easier to download, or copy, or print.

Very average read

I am an avid reader of all types of novels but I love romance. I have read quite a few romance novels and this was basically very very average. Meet Caitlin Bennett poor little rich girl who has no one in her life. She is a mystery writer and keeps herself locked up in her penthouse apartment. She starts to receive hate mail and is pushed in front of a car. At this point she knows that someone is stalking her. Her friend asks his brother to come protect her, and enter Mac, the bodyguard. These two have never liked each other and now are forced to spend time together until the stalker and of course later we find out he is a killer is caught.

I don't expect much of a plot when I read a romance. In fact, I'm used to the plots being "corny" and "underdeveloped." But not only was this story line silly as a "mystery" but the romance was awful. The Caitlin character spent most of the time whining, but you were supposed to like her because she treated her chaffeaur like one of the family. She's extremely wealthy and thinks someone is stalking her, but never bothers to hire private security. Her publisher gets a bomb threat and doesn't hire private security. When she is finally assaulted, one person comes to her rescue. This story had the usual flaws I find in many poorly written stories (e.g. the killer enters her apartment very easily through the roof). This was so hard to swallow - how many of the rich and famous have their homes poorly equipped so just about any nutcase off the street could enter. How many rich people would stay terriorized and not hire anyone to protect them? (The answer is zero, only a poor person would stay terrorized for months). Also the heroine's actions are just plain dumb (e.g. going on tv) And finally the killer was so predictable you knew who he would be in the first few chapters. Because in every poorly written story I've read, that's who the killer usually is. Very average read.

Possible Ghost Writer?

I have read many books by Sharon Sala/Dinah McCall and this one was a major disappointment. The writing was terrible. The clues as to the killer were so obvious, you knew who he was in the first couple of chapters. In addition, the phrase :Oh, My God" and it's variations were used to express every emotion from suprise to disgust to dispair - over and over again. I had to force myself to finish reading it just to see if maybe I had been wrong about how the murderer was. Unfortunately, I wasn't. Sala has written so many good books but if I had read this one first, I would never have bought another one. I'm hoping she didn't really write it - that she used a ghost writer for this one.

Great suspense, but romance falls short...

This was a very good story, but the romance got in the way. I am a diehard romance reader and thought that a romance/suspense would whet my appetite, but this story didn't do the job that well. The suspense was awesome and does keep you guessing till the end but the somewhat 'corny' romance got in the way of an excellent plot of a woman being terrorized by a crazed stalker...
~An unusually snowy December in Manhattan keeps most of the city's dwellers inside the comforts of their cozy apartments, but not the man who wants a bestselling mystery author dead. He prowls the streets, anxiously waiting or his moment to catch her alone. To show her how much he hates her. How much she has ruined hs life. Becoming frustrated with his waiting game, he begins to kill 'substitutes' of her until he can get his hands on her.
Caitlin Bennett, bestselling mystery author writes her next novel in ernest amid the chaos below while safely tucked away in her highrise luxury apartment. She is afraid for she has been recieving deranged letters from a crazed fan for almost 6 months, but the latest one bears a grim warning, she needs to tell the police before he finds her.

Can Mac save Caitlin from the man who despises her? Will he lose his heart to her in the process? A true thriller that will keep you guessing and the end is a shock...
I liked Caitlin, she was strong and witty, but Mac needs some work. He didn't hold my interest and his character wasn't developed well enough for me to believe his affection for her. The romance between the two was bland and kind of 'corny'. Too much 'mush' when there should've been resistence between them. I say this because throughout the beginning, we are led to believe that these two irritate one another and are attracted to each other at the same time. But what we get is 'mush' right off the bat with little to no dispute.

About the Author
Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program in Toronto that provides a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Dr. Fung lives in Toronto.

Timothy Noakes is Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Cape Town, a marathon runner, and the author of the bestseller The Lore of Running. Decades in medicine...why didn't anyone teach us about THIS!!!

I am a PA with decades of experience with diabetes and it's ill effects. I have watched through my career, type 2 diabetics listen to medical advice and never get any better. When my daughter, who was a gestational diabetic with her first pregnancy had a fasting blood glucose of 288 mg/dl, it became personal for me. They gave her the usual Metformin script and sent her on her way. Knowing that these meds do nothing to cure the disease and that it would only head her to a life on insulin and further weight gain I asked her not to take the meds, stop all carbs for the moment and let me do some research. That was when I came across Dr. Fung's lectures on the internet. As someone who has been studying holistic medicine for 30 years it made complete sense to me.
What makes this book and his lectures so valuable, is that he approaches everything from a medical model and shows why modern medicine is getting it all wrong.
He explains the process of glucose metabolism in a way I feel most lay people can understand. It's important for every overweight or type 2 diabetic to understand this process to better understand what they have been doing to their bodies...and unfortunately what we in medicine have been doing to their bodies.
What was most valuable to me was him quoting studies that are considered standards in the field of medicine...not studies on rats or studies that have 15 subjects...but studies conducted over years with thousands of participants...like the Frammingham study or the NHANES study. I had seen these studies in the most prestigious medical journals like JAMA...funny how some of the aspects of the studies that he cites just weren't included or stressed in the outcomes.
After going over all the metabolism...the studies on why reducing calories and increasing exercise just doesn't work...he presents a series of plans to reverse (yes I said reverse) type 2 diabetes. There are several options and one is bound to be workable for most people.
My daughter has a hectic schedule and always complained about diets that required 3 or more meals a day...she doesn't like to eat breakfast and has no time to schedule multiple meals. The four hour intermittent fasting plan worked great for her. After an initial adjustment of about 2 days (headaches which were not relieved by increasing her sodium, my guess was sugar withdrawl), she had no hunger, no cravings and felt great. Within a week her blood sugar was normal. She started this right before the holidays and was concerned about missing holiday dinners...my answer was that of Dr. Fung's: have your dinner, enjoy it and get back on track the next day. She did just that and got through the holidays effortless and satisfied that she wasn't deprived of a thing. She remained on her fasting protocol and just had her meal within that time frame. Her blood glucose was higher the next morning but normalized after one day. She chooses now to have one "cheat meal" each week and for 4 weeks the next morning her blood sugar was higher...but got lower each week and after 4 weeks her morning after a cheat meal her blood glucose was normal!
Within 10 weeks she has lost 46 pounds and is thrilled with her progress. Her doctor is shocked and initially thought the diet was nuts but now wants to know more about it...hence why I ordered 3 copies of this book...perfect for the medical mind.
This diet is basically a ketogenic diet on steroids...great for so many ailments and used by many cancer patients.
I started on the diet myself and found similar results with the exception of my cheat day...maybe because of my age, I do not get into ketoses for days after my cheat day which slows down my weight loss. I have still managed to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks effortlessly with the exception of the 2 day sugar hangover like my daughter experienced. I have since found a product that will put you into ketoses in a day, but it is very expensive and the taste is...not so great. I use it once a week and it allows me to have that cheat meal once a week without sacrificing my progress.
My guess it that Dr. Fung will become villified for several reasons:
1. His plan works without medicine
2. The drug companies will lose a tremendous amount of money
3. No special foods or supplements to buy
4. No added expenses...in fact my food bills are much lower.
5. He exposes the fact that this information has been available to the medical community for a long time and no one has acted on it.
I highly recommend this book and highly recommend you read through all the facts and figures he goes over...it makes managing your weight and your diabetes much easier over your lifetime without much thought once you know how your body reacts to food.
I also recommend getting an extra copy for your doctor because they will surely think you are nuts when you tell them what you are doing.
I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Fung for giving me the tools to cure my daughter and better serve my patients.
UPDATE: My daughter continues to do well with blood sugars that remain normal, her biggest complaint is that she has to keep buying new clothes. She has found her weight has stalled and after some investigation I realized why...she had been taking MCT oil, about 3 tablespoons a day in pill form (she doesn't eat breakfast and doesn't like the taste of coconut) and she stopped it at the same time her weight loss halted. MCT oil...and there are several like coconut and hazelnut, stay liquid at room temperature. They can be added to food like coffee or smoothies, even salads. I found that I can get back into ketosis at warp speed when I started using it. Amazon has several brands here and I like the 32 ounce Viva labs coconut MCT. I found that although the craving weren't horrible, I missed my sweets. There is a new book from Martina Slajervoa called "Fat Bombs" that I highly recommend. Tons of sweet treats that are keto friendly. I will say I hate stevia and it's aftertaste, but found Swerve to be a great substitute. I will also warn you that if you don't use MCT oil in many of the recipes and sub coconut oil in it's more solid form, the results are not nearly as good. The chocolate hazelnut smoothie does it for me...sometimes I sub ice for all the water and I get a soft serve like ice cream that tastes like I'm cheating. The MCT oil helps me get right back into ketosis after my cheat days without buying that expensive, horrible tasting powered drink I was using. She also has a book on ketogenic recipes in general that I found very helpful as she has many dinner recipes that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. I have taken my blood sugar both before and an hour after eating these "Fat Bomb" treats, (I'm not diabetic) and my blood sugar stayed the same or went lower...that was using the Swerve, which is expensive but worth it and a bit cheaper if bought in the 3 pack as I do.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this but Dr Jason Fung is a traditional medical doctor in Canada working in the system — where the government won't pay for a medical intervention if it isn't effective. He has helped his patients drop thousands of pounds with an unconventional approach. The book covers the reasons he has elected to take this controversial approach. His program, called intensive dietary management, helps people adapt a low carb diet and intermittent or (when appropriate and supervised) prolonged fasts. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to the connection between what you eat and what you weigh.

Dr Fung makes it clear that the calories in/ calories out model of weight management has proved to be a colossal failure, and explains why, covering the nuanced realities of hormones, fasting, carbohydrates, fats, sugars and sleep and the roles each plays in your health.

As a doctor myself specializing in weight loss, I too am deeply interested in the disconnect between calories consumed and body weight that seems to trap some people in a metabolic vicious cycle. So I find his focus on this topic fascinating. Particularly interesting are the arguments that lay out why we were wrong about the calories in calories out model and how human physiology seems to defy physics (but actually isn’t, as you’ll see).

Each chapter unfolds into a sensible, well researched, very well-reasoned and sometimes sobering discussion of a health topic.
Topics include:
▪ the heritability of (a tendency for) obesity
▪ The role of insulin in weight gain
▪ Benefits of fiber to gut health and how that translates to faster weight loss
▪ Probiotics—any reader interested in health should be familiar with this new field.
▪ The power of fasting (yes, fasting) and why it’s not so extreme

Must Read for Every Endocrinologist and Person with PreDiabetes!

Dr Fung methodically and concisely presents the critical thinking behind a straightforward causative relationship between obesity and high blood insulin levels. You lose weight when your insulin levels are lowered.

He begins presenting his case by stating all the studies he cites used human subjects (not rat, cat cow, or other non-human species) and are well-structured and vetted. The biochemistry is understandable and his logic is sound. If you have diabetes in your family or are pre diabetic following the advice in this less than $20 book could save you thousands of dollars in medicine and disease treatment.

By following the advice from his blog I, as woman of a certain age, have lost over 30 pounds, reduced my fasting insulin (and blood glucose) and saved money on grocery bills. I am starting to coach my friends with the concepts presented in this book using my own transformation as evidence. Your cure is within your control.

Reviewing the book, not the philosophy

I am not qualified to weigh in on the merits of Epicurus' school of philosophy. As Westerners, we've decided over that two thousand years that his thoughts on death and pleasure and pain are profound and provocative.

What's important to the average reader though is whether this is the book you should pick up to learn about him. The short answer is yes, the longer one is that it is not enough.

The book has a fairly weak introduction that doesn't provide much context. The author would have been well-served to have included the entirety of Laertius' essay on Epicurus to which he dedicated a large portion to in his biography of great philosophers.

Otherwise, the translation is good and the organization is helpful. The book is structured like a college reader - no frills, thin paper and a drab cover. It has all of Epicurus' fragments, letters and writings. Unfortunately many of the best ones are cut off or lost so we have to make due with what is left.

A first time reader or student looking to introduce themselves to Epicurus could do worse than starting here. I often refer back to my copy.

this book is a joke...

i'm sad this was promoted as being helpful for hormonal imbalances whereas really this is just a poorly written, poorly cited and not very effective diet book. if you were eating fast food and processed/refined things prior to following this diet, it might help you to clean out your system and lose weight but this is absolutely not a hormone reset and has very little if any merit to the science of the approach. i can tell you it hasn't worked for me so far, i'm 14 days in, and i'm following it to a T and have spent hundreds on all the extra suggested supplements.
as other reviewers have mentioned the products promoted such as the shakes and bars contain some of the very things you are supposed to avoid during the diet and i also didn't receive any of the bonus material promised.

this book and protocol seemed too good to be true, and definitely are. how great would it be to find a book that truly could approach hormone resetting and balancing from a scientific and qualified perspective- despite Sara's credentials, this falls short of even providing an informative, well written opinion... it is full of blanket statements and brief quotes that don't have any real merit or apply to what is being pushed. the casual and "i'm your friend" approach is fine but if that doesn't come with what's being promised it just seems like a creepy money hungry marketing scheme... and it's sad that so many "health experts" prey on people who could really use advice on how to fix what ails them...

i have 7 days+ re-introduction left and if something magical happens i will update my review but i highly doubt it will shift since i'm 2/3 in and haven't had any of the magical promised results.

Don't waste your money. I was very excited about reading this book, because I have been struggling with my weight since entering menopause. Although I eat mainly vegetables and protein in the form of chicken and fish (with very little red meat) I have been unable to lose any weight. This diet plan is something I am already doing and it is not working for me.
I feel the diet is also very misleading. Dr. Gottfried gives you 7 resets that are supposed to last for 3 days each, but that's not exactly true. Reset 1 is meatless (estrogen reset); Reset 2 is sugar free (insulin); Reset 3 is fruitless (leptin); Reset 4 is caffeine free (cortisol); Reset 5 is Grain Free (thyroid); Reset 6 is dairy free (growth hormone); Reset 7 is toxin free (testosterone). The truth is you are eliminating red meat, alcohol, sugar, fruit, caffeine, grains, dairy and toxins for the entire 21 days. Take a look at the menu she gives you on day 1, the meatless menu:
Breakfast
1 cup lightly brewed tea
omelet made with three eggs
1/2 cup asparagus
1 cup cooked spinach
1 tbs coconut oil
Lunch
Detox Shake made with 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, The shake is made with her protein powder, her fibre, kale and MCT oil
1 cup chopped kale,
1 cup chopped bell peppers
1 ounce raw cashews
Dinner
6 ounces wild-caught salmon
1 cup steamed broccoli
2 cups salad with 2 tbs oil and red wine vinegar
1 cup chopped artichoke hearts
1 cup chopped purple cabbage and 1/2 cup romaine lettuce

I rest my case. If you follow her suggested meal plan for each reset you are actually eliminating everything on day 1. All of the menu plans for each reset are similar, chicken or fish or eggs or a shake. You don't reintroduce any of the foods you eliminated until day 22. Reentry starts on day 22 and you are only supposed to reintroduce 1 food at a time every three days. The theory is you need to see how your body reacts to the food that had been eliminated. So it's not really a 21 day reset. It's a 42 day reset! I am so disappointed with the the book. It is absolutely nothing new. Please save your money.

it seems like just a general diet book with nothing specifically set ...

I thought from the podcast that this would be something different than it is. I know my hormones are out of balance and I couldn't find any help with normalizing them per what hormone was out of balance, it seems like just a general diet book with nothing specifically set for what may be out of balance. It is more for losing weight than balancing hormones, which I don't need. If I can find out differently by reading more, I will re do this review. However, there were also bonuses promised when you pre-order this book, which I did, but when I did what was required to prove it, they said they couldn't tell(and it was like an automated message) and gave me two other emails to contact, which I did, and have not received any communication in return. The bonuses seemed like they would be more helpful for my issue than the book, which why it is important to me. I also believe if you promise something, it is ethical to follow through. So right now I get the feeling they were just a way to sell the book, and there's really no customer concern there at all. Right now I'm considering returning the book. I give a lot of reviews and am usually very fair wiith them, but I think the way this has been handled is very unprofessional.

Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits: 10 Tips on Making Healthy Foods More Fun for Children

Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by making it fun. Provide healthy ingredients and let kids help with preparation, based on their age and skills. Kids may try foods they avoided in the past if the help make them.

  • Smoothie Creations: Blend far-free or low-fat yogurt or milk with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Use fresh, frozen, canned, and even overripe fruits. Try bananas, berries, peaches, and/or pineapples. If you freeze the fruit first, you can even skip the ice.
  • Delicious Dippers: Kids love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or vanilla dip.
  • Caterpillar Kabobs: Assemble chunks of melon, apple, orange, and pear on skewers for a fruity kabob. For a raw veggie version, use vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, squash, sweet peppers, or tomatoes.
  • Personalized Pizzas: Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use whole-wheat English muffins, bagels, or pita bread as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut up vegetables or fruits for toppings. Let kids choose their own favorites, then pop the pizzas into the over to warm.
  • Fruity Peanut Butterfly: Start with carrot sticks or celery for the body. Attach wings made of thinly sliced apples with peanut butter and decorate with halved grapes or dried fruit.
  • Frosty Fruits: Frozen treats are bound to be popular in the warm months. Just put fresh fruits such as melon chunks in the freezer (rinse first). Make "popsicles" by inserting sticks into peeled bananas and freezing.

  • Homemade Trail Mix: Skip the pre-made trail mix and make your own. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits, such as unsalted peanuts, cashews, walnuts, or sunflower seeds mixed with dried apples, pineapple, cherries, apricots, or raisins. Add whole-grain cereals to the mix, too.
  • Potato Person: Decorate half a baked potato. Use sliced cherry tomatoes, peas, and low-fat cheese on the potato to make a funny face.
  • Put Kids In Charge: Ask your child to name new veggie or fruit creations. Let them arrange raw veggies or fruits into a fun shape or design.

    A "must - have" book

    The first time I saw this book on the shelf of a prominent university library here in Jamaica, I just had to un-shelf it: it was eye - catching. I began reading and was impressed with the writer's style / approach in delivering information. It is so structured that it may be used at all levels.
    I will be making recommendations to my supervisor for this book, along with the study guide, to be given consideration for our reference collection.

    LOVED the class it was VERY INTERESTING

    Had to get this book for a nutrition class, LOVED the class it was VERY INTERESTING! The book was a great addition to the class. However, I felt that there were parts in the book that dragged. It went into far more detail in parts. However I can see that if someone was going for a nutrition degree that more in depth would be what they were going for.

    I have a problem with an author or "expert" on nutrition claiming that Registered Dietitians are the most complete and reliable source for science and fact based information. Is it a coincidence that Karen Drummond is an R.D. herself? Also, she lectures about getting "real" nutritional and scientific information from reliable and transparent websites that clearly identify their sponsors yet quotes from websites sponsored by, funded by and partnered with companies like Monsanto, Dupont, Kelloggs, etc.(except you wouldn't know that unless you do some digging). Is it a coincidence that this book is ridiculously expensive and co-authored by a former student from the Culinary Institute of America and happens to be the required textbook for the food science classes in the school? I'm so disappointed in the stale, regurgitated information in this book. I'd have an easier time just reading from the U.S.D.A food pyramid guidelines. There is nothing new or interesting in this book AT ALL. If you have any interest in nutrition, my guess is that you already know way more than what is discussed in this elementary school level waste of paper and money.
