I have yet to get through all the tips and excersizes, but I am getting there. So far the directions are SUPER easy to follow and a lot of fun. The author is quirky and blunt and I like that. Defintely worth the purchase!

It's not Photoshop Elements 7

Don't make the mistake I did when I saw Photoshop 7 and thought it was Photoshop Elements 7. Although an excellent book, it is over 7 years old and most techniques can't be followed in Photoshop Elements 7.

Extremely useful for learning cool stuff in a fun way.

There are two kinds of Photoshop books I buy, large expensive reference books (usually one per version I upgrade to) and specific technique books. The reference tombs I refer to when I’m trying to get something done and can’t figure out how to do it. They aren’t fun, but do provide needed guidance. Then there are the books (like this one) that are fun to sit down with and learn as I actually work on images. By the time I had done about a quarter of the techniques in the book I found that my Photoshop skills had really grown in areas that I’ve always found confusing before. And in several cases I found better ways to do stuff that I thought I already knew a lot about.
I usually don’t have much use for the CD’s that come with books, but this one has the before and after example pictures for each of the techniques, and I found it really helpful to open the actual files that the examples use and work through the steps, seeing the changes as the image is transformed. On the other hand, why anyone would want to use the trial version of Photoshop included on the CD, I can’t imagine. But the whole book is on the CD as an e-book, and that makes it possible to do some cool searches.
Overall I’m really impressed with what I was able to get out of this book, and with the enjoyable way it’s all presented. Lots of creative techniques, good background details about what the controls in dialog boxes do, and a painless workout of Photoshop’s more complex and powerful functions. Definitely a cool way to learn about Photoshop 7.

Very well written

This book is a beginning text on how we might better manage conflicts in our daily lives. We all have conflicts in our lives, with spouses, co-workers, friends, family and more. Most of us never think about how we might approach these conflicts. What I especially like about the approach used in this book is the way the authors have come up with dozens of case studies or situations. They are short but to the point. They are used to illustrate the theoretical points that the authors are discussing at the time.

For instance:

A Navy ship sees they are in a collision course with another ship and radio them: Alter your course ten degrees to the north, we are a battleship. The other ship replies: We’re a lighthouse, suggest you alter course.

This is to illustrate that assumptions might be at the base of a conflict and that explaining the true situation might be a much better than fighting. The Navy would not like it if someone ran their battleship into the rocks around the lighthouse. Retaining the thought about the battleship hitting the rocks will help you remember about assumptions.

Naturally I bought this because I had to for a BSU class. Good news- the chapters are small and easily cram-able for quiz. Nothing worse than taking up space just to take up space. Did I get enough words for Amazon review?

The real deal difference between editions

This review is for the FOURTH AND FINAL EDITION of this book. I do have an older third edition as well, and I will compare the two. There are plenty of reviews written about the quality of this book (older editions included), and I rate the book 5 stars for its content. However, I am not here to go into detail about that, but rather focus on the differences between editions.

The book contents are made up of the following parts: The Concept of Imbalances. Minor Pieces, Rooks, Psychological Meanderings, Target Consciousness, Statics vs. Dynamics, Space, Passed Pawns, and Other Imbalances. Each part is further broken down into specifics and is concluded with a summary and test questions.

The big differences between editions...This is an oversized book, much larger and 250 pages longer than the 3rd edition. The layout and size is just like Silman's Complete Endgame Course: From Beginner To Master. Larger print and more white space - I find this makes it much easier to read. The graphic designer should be commended. The 4th edition goes much more in depth (!!) about the concept of imbalances and guiding you to the correct plan. The main theme is the same as the older editions, but Silman gives it a new feel with updated ideas and ALL NEW examples. Silman writes it himself, he "literally wrote this fourth edition from scratch". Another huge change is the addition of Chess Psychology, 90 pages long! Silman claims many of these ideas have never been seen in any chess book before. The 4th edition does not include a Basic Endgames section like his 3rd edition. I believe it has no place in this book anyway and is covered in more detail in the previously mentioned work! He chopped this section and other parts that "distracted from the book's main purpose: mastering the imbalances". The 4th edition is more humorous! From drunken knights to passed bananas, he will keep you interested with some laughs along the way. Again, similar to his endgame course!

In the rear....
Silman added 33 pages of instructive articles where he takes some important pieces of writing from his Q&A column on chess.com. Some articles are Creating a Study Program, Proper Tournament Diet, Offering a Draw, and Is Chess a Gentleman's Game? This is a little bit odd considering he wanted to cut out any distractions. Unnecessary, but interesting nevertheless. Perhaps Silman wanted to give his column a shout out. On the other hand, the Index of Concepts is a great addition. If one of your games has a Rook for Minor Piece or Isolated Pawn, you can look up this concept in the index and find the listed pages to learn more about it. Bibliography and Index of Players/Games are included as well.

Silman recommends this book for USCF rated 1400-2100. And I agree! Being about 1900 USCF rated, I am reviewing and learning plenty.

I listened to IM John Watson's interview with IM Jeremy Silman on the Internet Chess Club. Great interview! I won't take away too much from it but I will add that Silman says, "If I am going to be known for one book, I wanted something I was really pleased with, and I am pleased with this." I am too! If you don't have a copy of Reassess Your Chess, then this is a great buy. If you have an older edition, there is enough new material and ideas with fresh examples to reassess all over again.

---- I think it would be great if amazon let you read the introduction online. Silman sums up the differences there as well.

The Positional Chess Bible

First a little about me:
I'm in the 1400 to 1600 range. I haven't read the original HTRYC, so I can't make any comparisons. I've spent over 100 hours going over this book from cover to cover.

Second a little about the book:
The book is on positional chess (aka the middle game). It's not about tactics or checkmates. It's about how to recognize key differences in your position versus your opponent's position and how to develop a strategy to make your position dominate your opponents. The book is divided into sections of positional principles (example: recognizing targets and fixing them as permanent a weakness). For each principle, several games are given as an example that highlights the particular topic. Silman's commentary is excellent. Often he analyzes a position by talking only about ideas without even mentioning particular moves. This was the most helpful part of the book for me. He also gives a lot of variations many of which I quickly glossed over. As a reader, you will have to study the book based on your level. At my level, the ideas are the most important, and I shouldn't get sidetracked with variations. At the end of each chapter/positional idea, there are test questions. At first, I thought the problems were really hard, and I couldn't solve many of them. But going over the answers which are explained very well both with ideas and variations was really helpful. Towards the end of the book, I was able to at least partially solve almost every problem even the ones that were rated 2000+. I didn't always find the correct moves, or the correct move orders, but I was able to evaluate the position and understand the ideas behind the position (what should be white's strategy and what should be black's strategy and what moves make sense for both sides). Sometimes I picked the 2nd best move, etc but I was still picking good moves that addressed the positional battle!

Style:
The writing and style are excellent. Silman uses conversational English and a coaching tone that is pleasant. It's obvious that he's passionate about positional chess and really enjoys teaching it. The book is fun to read. The book itself is large with a nice amount of white space that makes it easy to study.

Is it for you? Silman recommends this book for 1400 to 2100 range. I can't speak for the upper range, but the book was definitely challenging and beneficial for me. I'm going to completely re-read it in about six months and go over each lesson much more slowly and carefully (100hrs is sprinting through this book).

If aren't already very comfortable with the basics, tactics, and checkmate patterns, pick up a few books on tactics and solve 1000 tactical problems first and then get this book. Like me, you won't get everything the first time through, but you will learn to properly think about chess and develop a strategy.

Could it be better?

I would have benefited from more analysis in English (instead of an explanation in algebriac notation) and discussion of ideas, and fewer variations, but realize this is coming from my level. Higher level readers will need the variations. Ideas must be tactically sound and if you are analyzing master games, you must demonstrate that the idea is tactically sound. As it stands, this book is a masterpiece which I will re-read many times.

Best book for the 1400 to 2000 rated player

Jeremy Silman is simply the best chess instructional writer I've ever read, and I've read about 70 chess books. Nimzovich's "My System" is the only other book in a class with this one, and this one is better (though it covers different material. Both are great.)
The problem with most chess instruction is that the writer has not taught many students, and so they tend to make statements that seem obvious to them, but are way over our heads. Silman has taught many private students, and he therefore understands what it is we are not "getting." There are several concepts he explains that I've heard before, but never understood until reading him.
Silman's concepts about imbalances in a position are absolute epiphanies to us poor patzers who have been playing chess for years, but never really understood how to analyze a position except to say, "If I go here, and he goes there ..." Silman shows that analysis of specific variations should be the last thing one does, and shows - step by step - the proper way to analyze. His chapters on attaining a superior minor piece are in themselves worth the price of the book.
If you're looking for one book to vastly improve your understanding of chess, I highly recommend this as the first, second and third choice. If this recommendation seems almost too glowing, I assure you, I have no relationship with Silman. I am a writer, who loves chess as a pastime, and have had some of my work published in chess life. I seldom get to play in tournaments, but I recently played a USCF Life Master (rated 2200) for the first time, and I drew with Black. I attribute much of my improved understanding of the game to Silman, and the rest to Nimzovich.

New release is a disappointment

My brother and I really enjoyed our Wee Sing Silly Songs tape as kids, so I purchased the CD for my son. As I recall, on the old release the songs were sung by adults (albeit in funny voices). On the new release the songs are mostly sung by children, which gets to be irritating. I would much prefer to have my old tape back.

Wish I had read the customer reviews before I purchased this CD. Like others I had thoroughly enjoyed the original cassette with my children and wanted to purchase a CD version to play in my car with my grandchildren. I was so disappointed with this new release, even though the songs are the same. The children's voices and that of the adult male are very annoying to listen to. Fortunately I have my original cassette for comparison and will try to find some way to convert it to CD. If you enjoyed the original I would definitely not recommend this version!

Fantastic - Just like I remember

I have to admit that I'm shocked by some of the reviews. My sister and I grew up on Wee Sing Silly Songs. We would sing it for hours - completely went through one tape and had to buy another. I'm a new mom and I couldn't wait to order this for my daughter because it brought back such great memories - I started humming the songs again just by reading through the titles on the back of the CD. I even remembered the words and I haven't heard the songs in over 20 years. Yes, it has songs with lines like "Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms" and "I'm squishing up a baby bumble bee," but as a kid you don't even think about the adult meanings in the song, you think about how silly it would be to eat worms. I'm quite surprised that these are new songs to people, as I had learned them long before we ever even had the tape - they're frankly classics.

About the Author
After ten years as a CPA, ROGER FIELDS stopped counting beans and started cooking them. He owned two successful restaurants in New York City before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. Pretty basic info. for someone who has been in the industry, but really good for someone who doesn't know the in's and out's of running a restaurant. Many just think it's all fun. But it is a science to running a successful restaurant. It has a lot of information that can be good reminders, or refreshers to someone who has been in the business.

I bought this book a few years ago while at culinary school. Very simple concepts put in a simple way, lots of useful info.
Years into the restaurant business and being General Manager of a group of 5 restaurants I still come back for reference.
I'd say that "by the numbers" is a bit exaggerated, the financial info contemplated in the book is not that thorough, it is more an anecdotal take on the business.

About the Author
In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963 and The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center and Oxford University Press, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Century Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Torino (Italy). He was the 1998-1999 Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University.

The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Sixth Edition

"The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Sixth Edition" is book on American History written by Alan Brinkley, an American historian who has taught for over twenty years at Columbia University. The title The Unfinished Nation implies the remarkable diversity of America despite the many efforts to build a single nation. Throughout history, America is constantly changing and Brinkley captures the views of historians and allows the reader to develop their own conclusions based on facts.
I was required to read this book for a U.S. History class. Originally not interested in history, I found the readings actually enjoyable, easy to understand, and complete with details of each event. Each chapter starts with a timeline stating important events mentioned in the chapter. Every timeline provides a visual understanding how each event is contextually connected and related. In addition to the timelines, multiple pictures including detailed explanations exist throughout the book. At the end of each chapter, there is a conclusion and summary with an extensive reading list containing the topics stated in that chapter. Each chapter starts a new development and complete history of America's past.
This book progresses chronologically, covers the first encounters with Native Americans in the 1500's, and ends with the compromise of 1877. In the first chapter, Brinkley discusses the initial discovery of America:
"The discovery of Americas did not begin with Christopher Columbus. It began many thousand years earlier, when humans first crossed into the new continents and began to people them. Be the end of the fifteenth century A.D., when the first important contact with Europeans occurred, the Americas were the home of millions of men and women (Brinkley)."
Brinkley goes on to explain some of the ways white Europeans viewed the Native Americans, whom they called Indians. The Native Americans experienced many changes and adversities throughout their history. Nevertheless, none is a tragic as the arrival of the Europeans.
The first and probably the most negative impact of European contact is the introduction of disease. Diseases such as Chicken Pox and measles common to and non-fatal among the Europeans turned out deadly to the Native Americans. However, disease and infection was not the only cause of decimation of the Native American. Those who survived became slaves, considered savages, and deliberately killed.
However, Brinkley points out that not all the European contact was negative. The Europeans introduced the Native Americans to new agriculture techniques, crops, and domestic livestock, the most positive and substantial impact being the horse.
Chapter 2 discusses the cause and outcome of the American Revolution (1754-1781). The end of the French and Indian War brought more tension between Britain and America. Britain had a larger presence and strengthened its control over the Colonies. The Proclamation of 1763 also prevented settlers from expanding westward. This, along with imposed taxes to repay Britain's war debt, led to the start of the Revolutionary War.
Chapter 15 is the last chapter of the book and the end of volume 1. Brinkley discusses in Chapter 15 the Reconstruction and the New South, Radical Reconstruction, and The South in Reconstruction. The Reconstruction period occurred after the Civil War between 1865 and 1877 and involved the re-integration of states of the confederacy. Brinkley explains that during his presidency during the Reconstruction period, Abraham Lincoln had plans to free more slaves and grant additional freedoms. Reconstruction freed the slaves and granted them equality. However, the freedoms granted under the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth Amendments were not entirely effective. The compromise of 1877 ended Reconstruction, bringing another restructure of the political structure of the South.
The Unfinished Nation provides a social background for the political and economic events discussed in each chapter. Brinkley clearly reveals the diversity and complexity of growing nation and the powers that enabled Americans to survive and flourish in spite of conflict and division. During the first half of the United States history, Brinkley describes the significant events that led to the foundation and evolution of the United States today. Alan Brinkley uncovers historical facts and presents them in an unbiased, yet captivating fashion.

I felt that because this book was so condensed, with history crammed in to meet the criteria that sometimes the timeline wasn't concise. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't well organized.

OK but clearly not great.

It contains accurate info but the info it contains is so broad that it skims over most of US History--I guess a textbook is supposed to to that in a general sense, but as a professor I found it lacking and wouldn't have chose this one for my course. I see that it comes with nice online components and is fairly modern but as a student reading it for a self-propelled style course that I took for fun I found that many of the test questions weren't even in this material and I could read it and not know about more than half of what I read. I did appreciate details that weren't in the textbooks of the 1990's like union strikes and monopoly dealings and a greater emphasis on race relations in mining and Native American dealings (more history being revealed) but over all I found the book a bit boring and strangely organized and lacking in depth.-- It jumps too fast post 1900 onward.--It seems to be cramming more history into the same length of textbook these days is their solution to the problem of more and more history being revealed, but I found it more of a problem. 2.5 stars.
