This is really an outstanding collection of articles covering Material Studies from archeology and anthropological perspective. It would have benefited with some broader historical sociology or religious studies perspectives. Perhaps this could be added in the next edition. I hope OUP releases frequent updates as he field of material studies is evolving quickly.

About the Author
RICHARD N. BOLLES has led the job-search field for more than 40 years. A member of Mensa and the Society for Human Resource Management, he has been the keynote speaker at hundreds of conferences. What I like most about the PARACHUTE series is the author. If you don’t know it already, it will be clear after reading this book, that Richard Bolles is PASSIONATE about job search and advancing careers. His passion for the subject shows up loud and clear in this latest installment in the series.

It is easy to see why this series has been so wildly successful. Honestly, you would be absolutely NUTS to not read this book (or a recent edition.) The author has extensive experience in the field, and backs up his ideas with impressive evidence. That is, the recommendations here are not theoretical—they are founded in decades of experience. Furthermore, the material in PARACHUTE is presented in a clear, easy to read format.

There is one priceless section--do not miss "Conversation Tips." The author knows WHY the interviewer is asking you certain questions! For example, Bolles notes in Tip #13 that "Employers don't care about your past; they only ask about it as a way to predict your FUTURE behavior.” If one knows what the interviewer is really looking for, you can plan accordingly.

The author warns the reader to watch out when the interviewer suggests, "Tell me about yourself." Bolles: "How you answer that question will determine your fate during the rest of the interview." This question if really a test of sorts, Bolles explains. What they are really doing is a sneaky way of asking, “What experience, skills, or knowledge do you have, that are relevant to the job I am trying to fill.” So, forget your hobbies and personal history--that's not relevant.

This edition has updated suggestions on how to best use social/networking sites. In LinkedIn, for example, Mr. Bolles points out the importance of completely filling out your user profile, so that prospective employers can get an accurate picture of your qualifications. Bolles notes that surveys always show that not having a picture is a turn-off.

Finding your mission in life will not be trivial--and it will not be quick. Despite the stress coming from a job search, being forced to find a job can have beneficial effects on our whole life. It offers "a chance to make some fundamental changes in our whole life. It marks a turning point in how we live our life."

I suspect many readers of prior editions will be wondering if this year’s edition is really all that different from recent editions. Is it really necessary to go out and buy the very latest model? In my opinion, if you have an edition just 1 or 2 years old, you are not missing much. Many of the changes in the “2017” version are related to internet services. For instance, the author includes the latest and greatest job search engines that were not listed in prior editions. As another example, the author includes updates to the very latest career counselors.

All in all, I found WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE 2017 to be an outstanding work. It continues the string of top-notch career guides by the #1 expert in the field. As Mr. Bolles explains at the end of the book, PARACHUTE is not written by committee—it is personally researched and written by the author. If you are serious about your career, you would be nuts to not read this book (or at least a recent edition.) Some of the appendices will certainly be controversial, because the author (a former Episcopal priest) makes his own religious beliefs clear. It is indeed very unusual for a job-search book to include exhortations on self-examination and one’s mission in life.

Helpful Book if You Want to Make a Career Change

I loved this book. I have been working on how to become an ex-lawyer for a while now and this book helped me find my way. After reading the book and learning new things about myself, namely my strengths and weaknesses, I made a career change. The book also helped me with my cover letter.

Impressive resource. For beginners and more advanced illustrators

A big fan here of Manga and just about all of the Japanese styles of art. I watch several shows regularly from Full Metal Alchemist to Bleach. When I was younger I watched tons of _Anime_ programs too. So, its been a dream of mine to draw Manga in some form or another for quite some time. When I bought this book I was unsure how it would be helpful.

On my own drawing Manga has been less than successful. With this book I have improved my faces, bodies and hair more than I could have through practice alone.

The book covers the basics all the way up to perspectives in scenes and more. If you are even a little bit interested in drawing manga and like self help books then this book should not be passed up. It is a true treasure for the beginner up to the more advanced illustrator.

Accessories:
If you are going to be drawing on a tablet on your PC I recommend Manga Studio EX 4 (Win/Mac) for software and Wacom Intuos4 Medium Pen Tablet for the tablet. Don't bother with the Debut program of Manga Studio if you think you are going to get into this at all. I use Manga Studio to draw all of my line art sketches and illustrations.

If you are going to be drawing on paper, do yourself a favor and go to a real art store. Get good paper, HB or harder pencils and a VERY good eraser. Also get a set of .01 up to 1.0 pens. It will help you with your illustration.

Beginning as a beginner some of the steps and pictures get a little tricky in this book, but never get discouraged!! This is only the beginning after all! Original and cute characters give great ideas and features for characters of your own and there are plenty ways to try techniques and styles. The book itself is good material nice glossy pages and vibrant colors, and the steps and techniques are easily explained to the learning artist. A very good book for the beginner!

Drawing the heads - good. Drawing the bodies? Not good.

Bought this for my 10 - year-old niece and she is doing really well with the heads. Can't give it a higher rating as the drawing instructions for bodies are too vague. I'm going to get her a book so she can learn how to draw bodies.

The Devil's Arithmetic

I absolutely love this book. It is very sad, though, because you have to relive the Holocaust with the characters. Both the granddad and aunt survived the Holocaust with the loss of almost their whole family. The girl Hannah - which in Hebrew is Chaya - is invited to enjoy the festivities of Passover where Hannah's family also relived the horrid things that happened in the concentration camps/death camps. After Hannah opens the door to let the prophet Elijah in, she is in an alternate world! This is a great book because it has things that have most certainly happened, but the author adds a little twist to the book. This makes The Devil's Arithmetic very intriguing and gives a lot of suspense. I like it because it makes you think twice about what people have gone through. To conclude my review, I would like to say that this is a very good book, and I recommend it to anyone!

This book was givent to my daughter by my boss. She is a teacher and he thought it would be a good book to read to the children. It is a book about a Jewish-American girl who learns about her family and the holocaust. My heart is heavy when I read about such horrible times. History is such an important thing to install in our children.

I read this book when I was in the 7th grade and it sparked my interest in the Holocaust. I think it's a great book for middle schoolers to read to introduce them to the past and the seriousness of the Holocaust. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Overall this title is a solid introduction to Group Coaching. It covers a broad range of topics relevant to the would-be group coach including not only practical group coaching techniques but also insight into the business of group coaching. I might have preferred this to be a series of books that goes a bit deeper into topics of relative interest while giving the reader the option of skipping parts that may not be as relevant to their specific needs, hence the 4 star rating.

I know Jason says (I feel comfortable calling the author by his first name because after after reading, I kinda consider him a friend) to go through the book chapter by chapter, but it is written with such a fun, engaging, personal voice that I couldn't stop! My book has a ton of dog-ears that I marked while reading to take a more in-depth look at those topics in my following read-thoughs. I'm looking forward to getting down to business & taking full advantage of the downloadable content provided for each chapter and topic.

This book is for the everyday Etsian that doesn't have any real professional business experience. In Art School, they teach you all the basics of creating art, but no real-life skills to market, sell, and make a living from the art that you create. I've been looking for a practical resource that teaches the basics of business (financial, marketing, writing a business model) but that relates directly to owning a crafty business. The author takes some pretty complicated business topics & breaks them down into bite-sized nuggets that are super easy to digest!

I've been (trying) to sell on Etsy for about 3 years on-and-off. I've done... okay, but not nearly as well as I'd hope to do. I'm not ready to give up & this book has given me a kick in the butt to take some of the tips & tricks and apply them to my business to help it grow.

Highly Recommended From a Business Coach

This book is essential if you want your Etsy shop to thrive. I love it and as a business coach for mompreneurs I will forever recommend this book to all starting businesses. It is a rare find and not filled with fluff like a lot of business books. The author is an actual CPA too so he knows what he's talking about when it comes to taxes. No more guessing on that. Thank goodness.

Good for serious etsy businessmen, but not for occasional etsy users

I am a new seller on etsy and after seeing all of the good reviews of this book, I decided to buy it.

Etsy-preneurship is definitely helpful, but I feel like it skimmed many topics (understandable to some extent, there are whole books written on marketing alone). I also did not find the "motivational" talk useful - writing down the idea behind your business, where you are going with it, etc. I would prefer more practical tips, which come towards the end of the book. In addition, the downloadable spreadsheets were something I can definitely live without, but others might like this feature.

That being said, if you are looking for an easy into to accounting/bookkeeping for etsy, this is a great book for you. In layman's terms Mr. Malinak describes the details of tax laws and other things one needs to know. This book is geared towards people trying to make a living on etsy, so I would NOT recommend it for people like me who have a full-time job and dabble on etsy in their free time.
