In the midst of all the action, Marsden manages to work in a Swiss Family Robinson survival element, a little romance, and a lot of internal turmoil about man's justifications for hurting other human beings. In short, this suspenseful adventure story has something for everyone and just enough insight into what makes us tick in times of stress to allow readers to overlook the implausibility of the premise. It also provides an interesting look at the lives and concerns of Australian teens. Jeanne Triner

Thoughtful, interesting young adult series

Our family came across the Marsden series while traveling for several months in Australia. We listened to some of the books on tape and others we read individually. The stories were exciting enough to keep us interested, yet addressed teen topics well. As a mom, I did not have to fast forward through the mild sexual encounters. They discuss substance abuse, sex, safe sex, and other topics in a way that is accessible for teens.
The stories show a progression over time that is believable and captivating. I often think back to the main character and how she would deal with our new world order...
Anyway, I am buying the set for my nephew for Xmas. I highly recommend these for teens.

I look forward to teaching this

I really enjoyed this book and plan to buy the rest of the series. It has a good mix of adventure and romance so it will appeal to most of my high school students. The characters have distinct personalities and all of them show strengths in the story which could be a great jumping off point for a discussion on how we are all different and how our differences make society function better. Aside from thoughts about teaching, I simply couldn't put the book down because I wanted to know what happened next.

Disappointed

I had looked forward to receiving this book but was more than disappointed when it arrived. I have been fascinated with fossils for the last 68 years and own a large number of books on fossils - several on individual "Lagerstatten" sites.

The "Lagerstatten" fossil sites have always been of great interest to me as they preserve such a wonderful and complete window on the past.

I have hunted extensively in one of the sites listed - Pit 11 of Mazon creek were many soft bodied fossil creatures are preserved. I was lucky enough to find one unique specimen that resides in the Field Museum in Chicago.

I have two other books covering several "Lagerstatten" fossil sites and they are both quite interesting. The problem with this book is that there is so little on each site and the pictures are quite quite small. The "Tully Monster" from Pit 11 is unrecognizable unless you had held one of them in your hand and knew what they looked like.

The BIG plus for this book is that they cover several sites that are not listed in my other "Lagerstatten" books and the pictures are in color even though quite small and for that I am also most thankful. Expanding the number and size of pictures and expanding the text describing the material at each site would make this book worth 5 stars. I hope the authors decide to do just that in the future.

Very Interesting and enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this book. Well-organized, beautifully illustrated. A great read for anyone who loves paleontology and geology.

Being an amateur, though, I can't but note that a glossary of terms would be very helpful.

About the Author
W. J. MINKOWYCZ is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is Editor of Numerical Heat Transfer, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, International Communication in Heat and Mass Transfer, and the Series in Computational and Physical Processes in Mechanics and Thermal Sciences. Professor Minkowycz has won numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the 1988 ASEE Ralph Coats Roe Award, and in 1993, he was recipient of the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award.

E. M. SPARROW is in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Minnesota, where he has taught and researched since 1959. Professor Sparrow is a Max Jakob awardee, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and holds the ranks of Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor and Institute Professor.

J. Y. MURTHY is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and has worked in both academia and industry in the area of computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Her particular interests lie in the development of general purpose, unstructured solution-adaptive mesh methods for problems of industrial relevance, and more recently, in the numerical simulation of sub-micron thermal transport. Professor Murthy serves on the editorial advisory board of Numerical Heat Transfer, and is an active member of the ASME.

This book sucks. Bringing back loken, why? One of the great things about the hours heresy was that any character could die at anytime. His death was a great moment in the series. Two many characters and no really no story telling of him going into the warp and becoming a demon lord. Worst Graham Mcneil book I've ever read.
