This book is amazing! The testimonies on how praying Psalm 91 has impacted lives are modern day miracles. This is a must read for those who have loved ones in the military. A naval sailor and his Mom had a pact to pray Psalm 91 at the same time every day. Well, his sub was under attack at the time he was supposed to start praying. A torpedo was headed straight at the sub. He started to pray Psalm 91 as was his Mom wherever she was and the torpedo veered off at the last moment unexplainably. Psalm 91 has been prayed to protect families from natural disasters like tornadoes, protect children from criminal assaults, etc. This book is a beautiful reminder of how much God loves us and cares for us.

Superb Book! You'll Be Glad You Got It

I came across this book last August and was drawn to it. Once I purchased I couldn't put it down. I've since bought several copies for friends and family and their reaction has been the same. Whether you are a soldier or Marine going into combat, a cop or a fireman or just a family person concerned about your protection and that of your family, you'll want to read this book. Peggy Joyce Ruth has assembled many inspirational stories of veterans and several policemen and firemen and explained how their use of this Psalm has kept them from harm when they went 'in harm's way'. Some of the stories from the Iraq veterans are absolutely miraculous. Do yourself and your family a favor; get this book, read and start praying your own Psalm 91 covenant everyday. You'll be glad you did.

"Psalm 91" by Peggy Joyce Ruth contains "Real-Life Stories of God's Shield of Protection and What This Psalm Means For You and Those You Love..." This amazing book has several valuable features. The beginning of the book breaks down the psalm in such a way that enables the reader to understand the passage, itself. This section is followed by a series of testimonies of God's protection being lived out in real-life circumstances. The end of the book contains the psalm itself, written as a prayer, with blanks inserted where the name of a loved one would go.

This wonderful work of non-fiction is more than a Bible study. It is a source of encouragement that gives examples of how these verses of scripture became alive and active to others so that we can be on the lookout for similar evidences of God's provision and protection for us. This book helped open my eyes to the truth of scripture and motivated me to watch for God's protection activity in my own life. It has also given me a beautiful prayer to say over others. I highly recommend this book.

Barker has wisely identified many aspects of laboratory work not usually covered by "conventional" manuals, making her book one of the rarest sources for vital information required for any successful scientist. Overall, the volume is superbly written, and reading is made pleasurable by multiple hilarious remarks from the author. It is highly recommended for anyone working in research -- from undergraduate students to primary investigators, either in academy or industry. In my opinion, this is a "must have" volume for any laboratory.

About the Author

Kathy Barker received her B.A. in Biology and English, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Microbiology, from various branches of the University of Massachusetts. She did her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Viral Oncology at Rockefeller University and was an Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Cell Physiology and Immunology at Rockefeller University. She is now based in Seattle, where she writes and gives workshops on various aspects of running a lab.

indispensable lab resource

This is a wonderful resource for any lab that has rotating personnel. Often, experienced researchers don't have the time or interest to orient new people but it's all here, and I would be surprised if even an experienced scientist could read through this whole manual without finding useful information.

The author uses common sense and a casual style, and assumes that the reader knows nothing. Early chapters explore BASIC basics, like getting along with colleagues, getting started the first week, questions to ask, and safety procedures; lab setup and equipment; and organization. Later chapters discuss designing and setting up experiments, using a lab notebook, presenting data, making reagents, including storage and disposal, and working in a sterile environment. Final chapters detail work with eukaryotic cell cultures, bacteria, dna/rna/protein, radioactivity, centrifugation, electrophoresis and a light microscope. Along the way, the reader will learn how to format a journal article, work in a hood, or stay in touch with the PI. The only thing missing is library research, but since this is a bench guide that seems a forgivable omission.

Spiral bound and formatted for easy access and understandability, the volume concludes with a glossary and a good index. Black and white line drawings and pictures identify items found in labs and illustrate techniques from pipetting to making entries in a notebook.

This is not a textbook written by someone who's never worked in a laboratory; it is a sensible, intelligent guide -- the dream tour you'd like to have each of your technicians or students given if you only had the time! Also handy if a person is having problems and you want to refer them to written material. Any working lab could benefit from the addition of this volume. Fabulous.

A great book, but I'd probably rec the newer version

I bought the old version because it was cheaper. It's a great reference for those just starting to work in a research laboratory. If you just want a primer, the old version is enough. But the old version is clearly the 'old version,' and hasn't been updated for the digital lab.

Great reference, though, all around. If you can afford the new version, go for it, but it not, the old version will give you 95% of what you need to know about working in a lab.

About the Author

James M. Beard, Ph.D., earned a BA in chemistry from Manchester College (now Manchester University) in 1965 and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Stanford University in 1969. After two years of teaching chemistry at Manchester College, he pursued a career as a clinical chemist. During the next 12 years, Dr. Beard worked as a product developer, quality control consultant, and administrator in both hospital and industry settings. Since 1988, Dr. Beard has been a member of the faculty at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, where he is a professor of chemistry. Dr. Beard’s major interest at Catawba has been in environmental chemical education.

Man the Bird could play

This book really helps you appreciate what a master of jazz Charlie Parker really was. Seeing all of these solos with the chord changes right above sometimes makes you wonder "How did he think to do that?"

I like using this book for sight reading practice and a little bit of analysis afterwards. I read through the solos veeeery slowly (did I mention he's ridiculous?) and then look over the parts that I thought sounded pretty cool to see what he was doing. If you're a trombone player don't be intimidated that he had buttons to press very rapidly, just buy the book and play some great jazz, even if you're playing at 1/3 the tempo.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in improvising or just reading jazz. Especially trombone players.

Parker for Trombone

The book is an awesome transcription of Charlie Parker and his amazing solo and style. It is very accurate. It's a great way to enhance your improvisation library. The only problem that I had, was that the music is written down an octave than sounded by Charlie Parker. Obviously the tenor sax plays in a higher range. It's not really a problem, but you have to play an octave higher along with the recordings to try and match the timbre of the instruments. I guess it saves you from reading ledger lines or tener clef. Anyway, great book for a great price.

A must have for a jazz vocab.

First off, I have to correct funkybass4ever "baynzer66" 's review as he/she has commented that all transcriptions are in the key of C. This is incorrect and misleading. However all transcriptions are devoid of key signatures which is very useful in jazz, especially in bebop due to the rapid movement through key centers and the heavy use of chromaticism.

Now to the book itself. I view the omni book as one of the most valuable books of transcriptions out there, even if there are a few mistakes in it. It's one of those books that anyone learning the language of jazz needs to at least look at. It's nice to see that it's in bass clef (as I play bass); my treble clef version (I also play guitar) is well hammered and much loved.

If you are a bass player (or anyone else for that matter with good taste) and want to see/hear a bass player using Parker's vocabulary check out Dario Deidda, start at youtube. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that!)
