I've been looking for years for this book

I just got this two day ago, and I'm already giddy about it. It addresses what I think is a huge gap in existing resources about product design.

If you're an aspiring inventor or product designer, you've probably wanted to make prototypes of your sketches or ideas.

Most books on product design deal with the conceptual, problem-solving aspect. They tend to gloss over the actual creation of the product, and when they mention prototyping, it's usually the later stages. Here's a summary of every product design case study I've ever read: "The studio created several in-house prototypes. Once they'd worked out most of the dimensions and materials, they made a computer model using CAD, for further refinement."

Yes, we know. We know that's what they did. But HOW did they make those first prototypes, the ones that helped them move on to CAD? What tools and techniques did they use? That's what this book is for.

There's a ton of existing information on CAD software, rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC machining, etc. The problem is that none of this will help you get started. It would be incredibly inefficient - and creatively stifling - to make precision-made parts on a computer screen without first having worked out most of your design details physically, by hand. It would be a stab in the dark.

Especially in the earlier stages, you just want to test how things fit, feel, and work together. You want to play with different materials, found objects, shapes you can can quickly cut, carve and glue. Cut a notch here, carve a dent there, make the handle thicker, the base heavier, etc. Evolving your design as you go.

This book explains - in detail, with pictures - the different tools, techniques, and materials you use to do that. It goes over "looks like" and "works like" prototypes. Hand tools, power tools, work flow, workspace, and safety. Adhesives, foam, plastic, wood, metal, and the cutting and shaping of them all. There are a variety of case studies and tutorials, all dealing with different kinds of products, and designed to give you a decent idea of how to use all these tools and materials, or at least get started with more learning on your own. After skimming a few pages, I had already learned what kind of materials I personally needed for one of my projects, and I had some idea of how to work with it. Now I know what tools and materials I need to try exploring and practicing on my own.

This book is, of course, no substitute for hands-on learning. It's an overview, and it packs in quite a bit of information at a very reasonable price. People train for years to learn the techniques outlined here. Also, the book is also very clear that power tools and machines must not be used without supervised training, and so no attempt is made to teach their use in any detail at all. But, having read this book, you will have a much better idea of exactly what skills you need to hone, and the ones you can't hone yourself, you'll at least know what you're looking for.

Although this book does not go really in depth on processes and material selection it does give a good overview of how to go about prototyping. I would recomend this to anyone looking for an introductory book.

Models and prototypes simplify communication. This is a good resource for getting started, especially for someone who needs to present ideas, but does not have the design school background.

The Secret Bunker set a quick pace towards a culmination of events with a meeting of all the main characters and left me gripped along the way. It's not often I pre order the next book but I did in this case, there's no way I'm missing what happens next.

... Paul manages to provide an authentic teenage voice for his prime character all the way through. Looking forward to seeing what comes in the second of the trilogy which I've already pre-ordered, need I say more?

Really enjoyed this adventure seen through the eyes of the teenage lead character - his voice was so true and compelling. I'm looking forward to reading the others and would rather like to go and visit the real bunker!

What gave you the idea for The Secret Bunker Trilogy?

We'd been on a trip to Anstruther in Fife, UK and needed a rainy day activity for the kids.

Among the leaflets in our holiday cottage was one advertising Scotland's Secret Bunker.

It was built to help safeguard Scotland during the Cold War in the event of a nuclear attack.

The Secret Bunker lies 100 feet underground and is the size of two football pitches.

It's an amazing place and we had a great visit, though the story idea didn't follow for some time afterwards.

What made you start writing the trilogy?

I'd spotted a writing competition online which was being run by Chicken House Publishing.

My wife, my sister and one of my children had expressed an interest in writing, so I passed the competition to them.

It only needed 5000 words to get started, so I guess this must have started percolating in my head.

I woke up one morning with a very dramatic opening to a story.

It was an image of somebody getting trapped in the bunker while their loved ones were running towards them.

The huge bunker doors slammed shut, separating them, and I began to wonder what might have caused that to happen.

I jumped out of bed and wrote the beginning of the story.

It was much easier than I thought it would be to write a series of three books, I really enjoyed ramping up the level of jeopardy in each one.

This book hast it all for the Scifi/Apocalyptic fan.

The final book of The Secret Bunker Trilogy. This story has it all, aliens, secret plots, Armageddon, Nuclear War, and an unlikely group hidden beneath the surface of Earth in a Cold War secret bunker.

This series is well written and interesting, it kept me guessing throughout the whole story. I really enjoyed this series and can't wait to see what Teague comes up with next. You owe it to yourself to read this series.

Perfect Gift for Music Lovers

My girlfriend saw this book at Nordstrom months ago and mentioned how much she wanted it. Each time we'd go there, she'd leaf through the book. It would've cost us over $20 + tax to pay the full price, but it was cheaper here on Amazon. This along with other gifts for her came perfectly in time for Valentine's Day, so kudos to Amazon. The book itself is amazing! The illustrations are unique and the coloring is vibrant. It's one of those coffee table books/conversation pieces perfect for the home. Although the book wasn't packaged in any wrapping or anything, the book surprisingly came in PERFECT condition. My girlfriend was pleasantly surprised because she hates books and stationary items that come bent. Although my girlfriend is huge on music, she isn't a snob, so she really appreciated the book for what it is… Anything with Nirvana in it and she'll love it.

Great book for artists!!

It's easy to find ton's of tutorials and books on female figure drawing and fashion. This is a fabulous resource for anyone looking for tips on how to draw the male figure from head to toe. It comes with pages and pages of varying types of hairstyles, clothing, poses and faces. The clothing section alone has tips and diagrams on stitching, buttons, pockets, necklines ect.

i love all the drawings and the style i only wish it was spiral bound so you could lay the book flat and use it more like a work book.

Helps if it is what you are looking for

I bought this book just for face reference,but It is a good one if you are trying to change your croquis style.
I usually draw my men Asian but trying to be able to design not only for Asian, so it's important to be shown in the model too.
This book is figures of bulky men foreign people, white or dark skin with there's a detail example or how to draw the head, eyes, nose, ears, and everything else.
Comes with Detailed drawings of stitches, pockets, zippers and etc.
Lots of examples of Flats; front and back given, and also shoes.

From a writer known for her fiction, a moving memoir about a 12-year-old who got polio in 1949 in Austin, Minnesota. Kehret (Earthquake Terror, 1996, etc.) describes the disease, the diagnosis, the severe symptoms, treatments, physical therapy, slow recovery, and return home with walking sticks--and how she was forever changed. After her fever broke and she lay paralyzed in the hospital, her parents delivered a big brown packet of letters from her classmates. ``I had a strange feeling that I was reading about a different lifetime . . . none of this mattered. I had faced death. I had lived with excruciating pain and with loneliness and uncertainty about the future. Bad haircuts and lost ball games would never bother me again.'' There are touching black-and-white photographs of her roommates, who had already been there for ten years. Kehret's were the only parents who visited her each Sunday, and soon ``adopted'' her fellow polio victims. A simple, direct, and sometimes self-deprecating style of writing tenderly draws readers into Kehret's experiences and the effects of the disease firsthand. Almost a half-century later, this lovely book refocuses attention on what matters most: health, love of family, friends, determination, generosity, and compassion. My 9 year old's favorite book!

Excellent book! My 9 year old daughter (starting 4th grade) was dubious about the book at first, but after the first page was in love. She now claims it is her favorite book. It was a very interesting and engaging read, recounting the feelings and experience of contracting and recovering from polio. I enjoyed the photographs that were added so that my daughter could visualize things that were otherwise foreign to her (ie: an iron lung). Excellently written, full of humanity, and entertaining as well.

Great for All Ages

I read this to my 10 year old son because I wanted him to understand the importance of those irritating shots at the doctor. He LOVED it. Every day he asked me to read more to him. It is not every book that gets him that excited, and since this does not contain dragons or robots, I didn't expect such enthusiasm. He was extremely concerned early on that she would die of polio, and I had to give him the spoiler that it's an autobiography, therefore we know she lives - after all, she wrote the book. He was very relieved, and wanted to see pictures to prove it. That was his level of involvement with this book.

Ultimately, this book is very accessible for people of any age, but especially kids. The language is simple but paints clear pictures of how Peg felt. She writes about the sadness of losing a favorite stuffed animal and the incredible joy of being able to drink a chocolate milkshake after being refused it for days. These simple things make it easy to relate to Peg and the other kids she writes about, even if we can't relate to her experience with polio.

As a parent, I appreciate all the information included about the history of polio. I appreciate the lessons Peg learned and shares with us, including never giving up, the importance of family, and how small kindnesses can make a big difference. There are beautiful life lessons subtly woven into this book that can provide great topics of conversation.

I recommend this book for any kid or family.

Popular read for fourth grade

My granddaughter in fourth grade asked me to get her a copy for home because her class was reading it. She wanted to read ahead. This was her request. As a retired educator and a proud Nana, I jumped at the request and ordered it. She thanked me and told me they finished the book approximately two weeks ago. Her teacher asked her to donate it to her classroom set for future uses. She readily agreed. Of course she waited to tell me afterwards, but that's ok because it was for a worthy cause and the price was quite alright with me. I'm glad Amazon had the book because I couldn't locate it anywhere near me. Thanks so much!

I was so sorry when this book ended. This book had me laughing and crying at the same time, I absolutely adored it. I do hope there will be other stories about the Comfort Food Cafe, I would hate to think there is only two books.

Enjoyable read!

This books up where 'Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe" left off. It was an enjoyable read, however, I did feel that the author repeated a lot of the same content that was in the first book. I understand that she wanted to make it so a reader could start with either book & know what was going on, but it was almost too repetitive. Regardless, I enjoyed catching up with the characters & getting to know Becca. Ms. Johnson does a good job of describing the scenery & characters. You feel like you are right there with the folks in the cafe, looking out at the beach and eating one of Laura's yummy creations. Hopefully, there will be another story coming!

Not my kind of book - was really not described well in summary - too much drama and not really a cozy story which was what I thought it was.

Excellent introduction into the field

This book does an excellent job outlining the theoretical background and applications of geostatistics. After an overview and explanation of a concept (often involving some mathematical notation) the authors drop back and give an "intuitive" approach to the subject that I find incredibly beneficial.
I am a self-taught student of geostats, and this book is my tutor. While I would prefer some formal instruction to augment this text, the text is excellent and a must-read for any student of the field.

Very good introduction to Geostatistics

This book is an excellent introduction to the somewhat difficult field of geostatistics. The examples in the book are based on the analysis of a digital elevation model transformed into data variables. This approach works very well and the explanatory text is very readable and understandable. Initially I thought that the math would make difficult reading but I am pleased to be wrong. The basics of Geostatistics can be understood from this book without having to translate the formulae ! An alternative very quick introduction to Geostatistics may be found in Burrough and McDonnell - Principles of Geographical Information Systems pp 132-161. My background is in Geology & GIS.
