A Genuinely Great Mind

Lasch has a great intellect: he's read deeply and though he's strong-minded, he's also compassionate. Here he examines faulty ideas, often finding the grain of truth that's given them wing. In THE MINIMAL SELF, still deeply relevant to our times, he explains two urges in light of man's destructiveness and our lack of faith in a future: a regressive, narcissistic wish to merge with the environment, in a timeless solipsism that negates the past and the present; or else, a strict adherence to rules and regulations that demand obedience by threat of punishment and retribution, and which harken back to false nostalgia for a simpler past.
Lasch shows us that it's much more complicated than that: that our obsession with survival, our lack of faith in language to communicate commonalities (and its exploitation not just by the media but by activists trying to counter the media's insidious influence), and our confusion about how to structure, or de-structure (destroy) our lives leads us back to Freud, back to humility, and back to separation, away from narcissistic fantasies of either merger or omnipotence.
In brilliant, thoughtful, complex prose, Lasch argues for an enlightened dependence, a reliance on the cultural sphere to give meaning to our inner drives and our recognition of the objective outside world, and thoughtfulness and sobriety in place of infantilism and fantasy. Lasch argues for mature play, and his is a convincing argument.

The Minimal Self

The book is disturbing and insightful. Though written in the 80s, this social/psychological/political/aesthetic critique describes today's disconnect between self and society: the lack of humanisitic glue; the sad (and secret) nihilism of religions that can no longer keep the genie of destruction corked up; the merging of mass culture with mass destruction. Just as it must've been two decades ago, the book is an amazing wake up call. My copy, however, was in poor shape. The binding is upside down and the pages are falling out.

Toward A Psychology of Non-Being

For anyone familiar with Abraham Maslow's classic, "Toward a Psychology of Being", my title will seem particularly relevant. While Maslow was interested in studying self-actualized and self-actualizing people, Lash tells us about minimally actualized people. Lasch tells us that as a culture, we have become infantile, childish adults who won't grow up! He suggests that a paradigm shift away from our merger fantasies could help us to individuate more as moral agents and less as consumers of mass culture. Individuation and radical self awareness are not new themes, but in this book the concepts are conceptually abstract. Many readers may find Lasch's argument particularly difficult to follow. He uses language that is quite technical and specialized.
Maslow's thesis is far more accessible to the interested reader. Both authors address our needs for status, security and love. The message in Lash's, "The Minimal Self", is far less optimistic than the message from Maslow. Reaching our full potential is quite unlikely in a culture consumed by materialistic sources of gratification. Lash's message is that personal accountability is not synonymous with utilitarian morality. Utilitarian morality tells us that the ends justify the means, any means. It's the goal oriented style minus consideration for or of others. Implicit in Lasch's book, , is the belief that secular societies breed discontent.
Actually, Lasch''s message, put simply, is that we are becoming more and more a culture which breeds and fosters narcissistic psychopathology. However correct, as a theme, this idea is not that new. While I agree with the message, the vehicle itself is difficult to get through. I am,therefore,recommending two other books on the topic of narcissism. The firsts published in 2007, is written by Paul Smith. It is titled: "Primitive America:The Ideology of Capitalist Democracy". The second recommendation, written in 2009, is titled:"The Narcissism Epidemic:Living in an Age of Entitlement". The authors are Twenge and Campbell. The subjects of all three books, including "The Minimal Self", overlap. It might prove interesting to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these various authors. Also consider two Frontline reports I recently watched on PBS. The first, "Consumed". The second, "Generation Like".

About the Author

Stanley Davis is a former manufacturing executive with Harris Corporation and an adjunct professor of quality.  He is co-author of several other books with Dr. Goetsch including Understanding ISO 9000 and the ISO Standards and Implementing Total Quality.

So I got through about 3/4 of the book, but honestly just lost interest. Tons of grammar mistakes and the dialogue was really weird, never seen anything like it. It got 3 stars because the lesbian demon romance is interesting, and the overall plot a good idea. But my biggest problem was the characters, I just found them unlikeable. Ravyn was a badass, true. But that doesn't mean she had to be such a...well, such a word that my momma told me isn't polite. Seriously, I get the whole "sarcastic bounty hunter" image and it's appeal. But her character was so shallow and plain mean I couldn't like her. She's the type of person who would laugh when her former best friend is frustratedly trying to figure her out so they could rekindle their friendship.

For Kara I mostly just wanted to roll my eyes. Like, at every sentence out of her mouth, or every inner dialogue. She was so weak and gullible it almost hurt my eyes to read. Imagine Twilight, but Bella is Kara and Ravyn is fangboy. At one point Kara calls her the light of her life and wouldn't know what she would do if she left again. *Cue gigantic eye roll* Plus, Ravyn left for 6 years, not telling Kara if she was alive or what. Then Kara's just like, "Oh, you left me to be tormented by the kids you once beat on, and who then wanted revenge. But you're a demon, so that makes up for it." I dunno, maybe I just went in with high expectations from all the reviews. It really was a 2.5 stars, but I like to round up in most occasions.

ahhhh a little blood...

Well, actually there's a lot of blood. As other reviewers have stated...I couldn't put it down. The characters, especially Raven and Kara bring it to life. But I loved Raven, and i wished she loved me. She is bad....very very bad, a demon, she kicks ass all through the book. no one is safe at her deadly hands..except for Kara of course. This book is definitely on the dark side of fantasy (and I mean dark) there's a lot of brutal stuff in this one, but that's what's so great about it...it's fantasy, so let the heads roll. The new version, OPD-2, has been developed from a purely diagnostic system to include a set of tools and procedures for treatment planning and for measuring change, as well as for determining the appropriate main focuses of treatment and developing appropriate treatment strategies.

The OPD-2 task has done a wonderful job again. They have managed to carefully organized very complex material and summarize them in a way that gives the clinican a common language when formulating cases of different level of severity without losing the complexity of the whole issue. It is a "must read" to all who are involved in trying to clarify what is going on with their patients.

This meticulously researched book, which grew from a much buzzed-about article in the Harvard Business Review, puts into plain language an undeniable fact: the modern workplace is beset with assholes. Sutton (Weird Ideas that Work), a professor of management science at Stanford University, argues that assholes—those who deliberately make co-workers feel bad about themselves and who focus their aggression on the less powerful—poison the work environment, decrease productivity, induce qualified employees to quit and therefore are detrimental to businesses, regardless of their individual effectiveness. Did the Harvard Business Review really print an article that used the word " asshole " eight times? Apparently so, and from it evolved this audio book, a handy guide to the domineering bullies found in the workplace, on the sports field, and in the government. The author reads this abridgment in a friendly, informative style, making it one of the stronger business titles this season.

An Excellent Must-Read for Anyone in the Workforce

I am not one who typically reviews books. I do have to say that the No A**hole Rule was an excellent book both in researched content and personality. I was able to read this book in one sitting. It is very topical for anyone who shares a workplace with A**holes or demeaning people. I am sure that most of us do not have the luxury of avoiding these people on a day to day basis. If so, let me know where you work .

For the most part, it is inevitable that we have to deal with these people face to face. This is the first book that doesn't skirt around the facts of diagnosing these people as a**holes (by there actions) and giving effective advice on how to deal with them or not be one of them.

Bob Sutton's List of The Dirty Dozen Common Everyday Actions That A**holes Use

1. Personal insults

2. Invading one's personal territory

3. Uninvited personal contact

4. Threats and intimidation, both verbal and non-verbal

5. Sarcastic jokes and teasing used as insult delivery systems

6. Withering email flames

7. Status slaps intended to humiliate their victims

8. Public shaming or status degradation rituals

9. Rude interruptions

10. Two-faced attacks

11. Dirty looks

12. Treating people as if they are invisible

The Author sites companies that have effectively instilled a "No A**hole Rule" because they have realized that the true cost of the A**hole runs deeper than the A**hole's salary (TCA or Total Cost of A**holes). It truly can diminish productivity in the office, increase employee turnover, stifle communication, and lower employee self esteem and health. The book explains how to implement a No A**hole Rule at any organization.

According to the book, negative interactions have a five time stronger effect on mood than positive interactions. So you can see that keeping around that "very productive A**hole" may have deeper implications that do not show up on the books, but take a toll on the ones around him/her.

There is a whole section in the book detailing how to avoid being an A**hole which I won't get into here. I think that it is a truly insightful section on how to face ones own demons, and to be a more effective co-worker/partner/boss in a work environment.

The section that really jumped out for me (due to its immediate applicability) was the ways to deal with A**holes. Many books talk about enthusiasm and working harder with passion allows you to get around people who are demeaning and rude at work. This book explains that this is not necessarily the head on solution to avoid rudeness in the workplace. In some instances, developing indifference and emotional detachment may be the best way to survive in the long run while achieving small victories. In the end, small victories can lead to winning the war. You can also limit your exposure, hope for the best and expect the worse, de-escalate and re-educate, or stand up to A**holes.

In conclusion, this was a great read. I think it is extremely topical for anyone who is involved in HR or hiring new employees and management. I also believe that it is an especially good read if you are a victim of A**holes on a day to day basis.

Oh, it also makes a GREAT GIFT for the token A**hole in your office. Enjoy!

A New Best Book on Empowerment in the Workplace

I have never written a review on Amazon, but feel strongly about writing a review for Sutton's No A**hole book because I feel many people whose might be concerned about the "taboo" title might not look beyond it and do themselves a great disservice.

As a female professional, I felt highly empowered reading this book. Dr. Sutton acknowledges the bullying and crass behavior that frequently occurs in the workplace and offers concrete ways to combat these trying individuals. I have already practiced his technique of publicly discounting bullying behavior with great success.

I found his suggestions for handling office place bullies - as both a superior and subordinate actions extremely smart and well-grounded. This book is based on sound social psychology and organizational research and does a great service to workers throughout the world.

I have dog earred many pages of the book and expect it to be a handy reference for many years to come.

A Simple, but Extremely Valuable Premise!

I'll make my review brief, since this is a little book with a very concise point. Basically, life is far too short to tolerate jerks in the workplace. It's easy to spot these people based upon the havoc they wreak and the fact that they always choose targets with less power than themselves. This book provides terrific strategies for dealing with jerks, whether you are in management and want to weed them out, or are unfortunate enough to be working under them.

One of my favorite lines in the book is: " Passion is an overrated virtue in organizational life, and indifference is an underrated virtue." While self-professed management gurus who have never had a real job like to trumpet passion in the workplace (and implicitly accept jerk-like behavior), Dr. Sutton points out that sometimes a bit of detachment goes a long way in making life bearable. This is a book about picking your battles and doing what you can to make your workplace enjoyable. It is a quick, interesting and easy read.
