When in doubt, this is the book that comes out first. My husband and I pulled it out several times during our engagement to find out "how" we should do things. From setting the table to working with kitchen staff help this book has it all. (Now if I could just afford the staff!)

Lean-Led Hospital Design: Creating the Efficient Hospital of the Future, by Naida Grunden, Charles Hagood

Instead of building new hospitals that import old systems and problems, the time has come to reexamine many of our ideas about what a hospital should be. Can a building foster continuous improvement? How can we design it to be flexible and useful well into the future? How can we do more with less?

Winner of a 2013 Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence!

Answering these questions and more, Lean-Led Hospital Design: Creating the Efficient Hospital of the Future explains how hospitals can be built to increase patient safety and reduce wait times while eliminating waste, lowering costs, and easing some of healthcare’s most persistent problems. It supplies a simplified timeline of architectural planning―from start to finish―to guide readers through the various stages of the Lean design development philosophy, including Lean architectural design and Lean work design. It includes examples from several real healthcare facility design and construction projects, as well as interviews with hospital leaders and architects.

Review

There are tens of billions of dollars being spent on construction of new healthcare facilities in the U.S. today. Before spending another dime healthcare executives should read this book and learn how it’s possible to take as much as 40% of the building cost out before a shovel ever goes in the ground. This result has now been proven over and over by many healthcare organizations on the Lean transformation journey. As a bonus, but even more importantly, we can improve staff satisfaction and clinical quality at the same time as the cost goes down. Naida Grunden and Charles Hagood beautifully document these outcomes by the use of real case studies in addition to her own extensive experience as a careful observer of Lean healthcare.
―John Toussaint, MD, CEO, ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value

Leading Lean hospitals have learned they need more than ongoing continuous process improvements. Given the chance to build new or expanded facilities and space is a unique opportunity to build in efficiency and patient-centered care from the start. Lean-Led Hospital Design is a fantastic book that shows the reader exactly how to incorporate process design with space design in a collaborative and iterative manner. The vivid examples shared by Naida Grunden and Charles Hagood bring these principles and practices to life. This book will help your organization immensely, whether you are just starting to plan for a new facility or whether you are ready to move in.
―Mark Graban, Shingo Prize-winning Author of Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement, Second Edition

Naida Grunden, author of The Pittsburgh Way, and Charles Hagood have nailed an important oversight in Lean and other industrial engineering applications in health care. Too little attention is focused on the role of the environment and physical plant in making exceptional performance possible. Would a world-class symphony perform in a substandard hall with poor acoustics, uncomfortable seats, audible distractions and visual impediments? Excellent case studies demonstrate how health facilities can be designed to advance safety, clinical quality and efficiency. This book argues effectively that performance excellence must be aligned with a supportive physical environment.
―Karen Wolk Feinstein, President of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation of Pittsburgh and Founding co-Chair of the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative

Hagood and Grunden have engaged one of the most complex and important subjects facing our great nation. This generations place in American history is taking shape and in no small part will be valued on how we responded to the health care cost crisis. This book provides useful insight as to how we can design care that fulfills its obligation ‘to do no harm’ and yet provide it in a cost effective manner.
―John Bardis , Chairman, President, and CEO of MedAssets

Lean techniques and tools have been transformative in our organization as a means of systematically analyzing processes and office design to eliminate waste. However, the beauty of Lean principles is that the goal is not simply to eliminate waste or increase efficiency but to ensure that change is always patient centered and driven by the front-line workers who interact with these patients every day. Lean principles help us to keep our patients at front and center whenever we are contemplating changes. In Naida Grunden's Lean-Led Hospital Design, she writes with great clarity and wisdom about how Lean principles can be used to create the ideal Hospital of the future.
―Eileen Boyle, MD, Executive Director of East Liberty Family Health Care Center

Grunden and Hagood have produced an authoritative, compelling argument for adopting the principles of Lean management integrated through all aspects of hospital management from architectural design, construction through delivery of clinical care. In several examples they document the gains to be enjoyed in more functional design, construction cost savings, operational efficiencies, and more satisfying work conditions for healthcare professionals, and–most important–for the safety, satisfaction, and improved outcomes for patients. The unifying vision for building design and healthcare operation is ‘what is best for the patient.’
―Robert W. Mason, Managing Partner of CC-M Productions

Lean-Led Hospital Design is a work we’ve all been waiting for. The authors do a tremendous job consolidating this relatively new body of knowledge into a practical, applicable application that will impact millions of people - enhancing value delivery by removing non-value added waste from the patient experience.
―Mike Orzen, Shingo Prize-winning Author of Lean IT: Enabling & Sustaining Your Lean Transformation

High quality care and patient safety are requisites of the health care delivery system. This book is a must for every Lean practitioner with its practical real-time examples of facility improvement that engage frontline staff to remove waste and improve outcomes.
―Debra N. Thompson, PhD, RN, Principal, Debra N. Thompson, LLC and Adjunct Faculty, University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing

There are many books on Lean management, but this one really sets itself apart in its clarity and readability. Grunden and Hagood offer a thorough discussion of Lean management techniques in building design. They share real-life stories of healthcare leaders and design teams who took the time to analyze their processes and ultimately achieve incredible project and operational savings through facility design. It’s written in a compelling tone (once you start, you’ll keep reading) providing a clear and actionable path to improved design.
―Margaret F. Schulte, DBA, Bestselling Author of Healthcare Delivery in the USA

Naida Grunden and Charles Hagood have produced a miraculous book integrating smarter and continually improvement management and architectural design. Just practicing the new management which dates back to last mid-century Japan has helped several hundred American hospitals cut costs by 50 percent, get rid of hospital-acquired infections and drastically reduce medication and medical errors saving untold lives. Constructing hospitals with the input of knowledgeable managers, doctors and nurses, who are themselves continually learning, hopefully is the key to solving America’s hospital and care delivery crisis. Gruden and Hagood have produced the next leap forward in consciousness and improvement.
―Clare Crawford-Mason, Producer, NBC White paper, If Japan Can, Why Can’t We?; PBS Documentary, Good News: How Hospitals Health Themselves; and Co-Author of The Nun and the Bureaucrat, How they Found an Unlikely Cure for America’s Sick Hospitals

This book by Naida Grunden and Charles Hagood speaks with engaging clarity about how Lean can and should be used as the guiding philosophy for designing hospitals. One compelling feature is its systems perspective that is sensitive to the interrelated roles of people, processes, leadership, and culture in making Lean work. Another is its emphasis on actionable understanding through a great selection of concrete examples, case studies, images, and insights from experienced practitioners. I cannot think of a better primer on Lean-led hospital design.
―Rangaraj Ramanujam, Associate Professor of Management, Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University

While there are may be many faces of Lean, including process design and facility design, these many faces share one expression – no outcome, no income. Grunden and Hagood have done it! Their latest book points the way, in everyday language, as to how we can achieve an improvement in the quality and outcome of care and save money and reduce error at the same time. This book is a guide for survival under an era of accountability and will drive the ‘no outcome, no income’ agenda deep into the second decade of the 21st century.
―David B. Nash, MD, MBA, Dean, Jefferson School of Population Health, Thomas Jefferson University

Finally! Proof that Lean―and visual―can do for hospitals what they have already so spectacularly done for industry: improve processes, create dramatic bottom-line results, and align the work culture…and now, while saving lives. Grunden and Hagood make an irrefutable case. Hospital infrastructure in the United States in a disastrous state of decay and insufficiency. The need for new structures―and new paradigms of thinking―is urgent. All the more reason for getting this book into the hands of hospital management, administration, and planning―as well as architects, contractors, and builders. A beautifully researched and logically delineated book, Lean-Led Hospital Planning is a 'must read' for everyone associated with hospital running and planning―preferably before any action is taken in the old 'design-bid-build' sequence.
―Gwendolyn D. Galsworth, Ph.D., Visual workplace expert and Author of Work That Makes Sense & Visual Workplace/Visual Thinking

A new and much-needed perspective on healthcare quality and safety
By Steve Bell, Lean IT Strategies
The latest Shingo Prize-winning book by Lean Healthcare pioneer Naida Grunden and her co-author Charles Hagood presents a new and essential perspective for the future of healthcare service delivery.

In the past, facilities have been designed with efficiency in mind -- efficiency of the healthcare providers, rather than the holistic, team oriented view of the patient care process and outcomes. As a result we end up acting "penny wise and pound foolish". Just like a factory, where Lean Thinking began, in a healthcare setting you cannot separate the flow of work from the facilities where the work is performed.

Read this book and learn how to think about healthcare service delivery in a new way, redesigning the flow of work and patient interactions through Lean pull and flow principles.

Steve Bell, Lean IT Strategies founder, Lean Enterprise Institute faculty

From the Back Cover
Succeed with Scrum in Even the Largest, Most Complex Distributed Development Projects "Forewords by Ken Schwaber, Scott Ambler, Roman Pichler, and Matthew Wang" This is the first comprehensive, practical guide for Scrum practitioners working in large-scale distributed environments. Written by three of IBM's leading Scrum practitioners--in close collaboration with the IBM QSE Scrum Community of more than 1000 members worldwide--this book offers specific, actionable guidance for everyone who wants to succeed with Scrum in the enterprise. Readers will follow a journey through the lifecycle of a distributed Scrum project, from envisioning products and setting up teams to preparing for Sprint planning and running retrospectives. Each chapter presents a baseline drawn from "conventional" Scrum, then discusses additional issues faced by distributed teams, and presents specific best-practice solutions, alternatives, and tips the authors have identified through hard, empirical experience. Using real-world examples, the book demonstrates how to apply key Scrum practices, such as look-ahead planning in geographically distributed environments. Readers will also gain valuable new insights into the agile management of complex problem and technical domains. Coverage includes - Developing user stories and working with Product Owners as a distributed team - Recognizing and fixing the flaws Scrum may reveal in existing processes - Engaging in more efficient Release and Sprint planning - Conducting intense, brief daily Scrum meetings in distributed environments - Managing cultural and language differences - Resolving dependencies, performing frequent integration, and maintaining transparency in geographically distributed environments - Successfully running remote software reviews and demos - Brainstorming what worked and what didn't, to improve future Sprints This book will be an indispensable resource for every team leader, member, product owner, or manager working with Scrum or other agile methods in any distributed software development organization.

Disappointing
By Michael C
If you have no Agile background, then this book covers some of the basics. If you are a actually after information on Agile in large Distributed and complex integrated environments (as claimed by the authors) then you will be very much disappointed. However, you will learn that you need to be aware that other countries are in fact in different time zones - this seems to be a key issue for IBM (the author) as the time zone issue is repeated ad nauseam throughout this book. In fact many of the key points (which are mostly around telephone conferencing issues to India) are repeated over and over.

It's how they really do it!
By Linda Rising
There are a lot of books about agile software development. There are a lot of books about scrum. Most of them are pretty general. Of course, they have examples and case studies. What I like about this book is that it is a real reflection of how things are done at IBM. Whether you like IBM or not, you have a chance to peek inside the big blue box and see how they make things tick. I really, really appreciate that chance, so I applaud the work of the authors, who have not only collaborated to write the book but also invited their colleagues at IBM to contribute. I was also impressed by their decision to donate all royalties to charity. Well done!

Basic book
By Alberto Dominguez
This a really basic book about Scrum and things you have to keep in mind when you handle several teams. Tips are obvious about the team location, time zones, and culture, but it really does not put any example or situation that support additional knowledge.

Great Book
By Metria
I bought this book for Level 2 nursing classes that have not started yet. It has been a great help with Level 1 as well. It breaks everything down for you. It has been great for working on my drug cards as well. Nursing students can not go wrong buying this book even for level one meds. I am very happy I decided to buy while still in level 1.

Not bad for a pharmacology book
By Ilene Witt
Not bad for a pharmacology book. Of course, how interesting is Pharm really going to be? But in general it is easy to read and understand and breaks things down pretty well. I would have given it 5 stars, but I just don't like pharmacology. But I have to say that the seller got it to me quickly in pristine condition.

By Scott B.
I have read a lot of books in this genre. Over the years I've mixed a lot of fictional series about figures in the British Navy and non-fictional books about British Naval history on battles and exploration. The one aspect that I've consistently found lacking in historical fiction is that the main characters are never exposed to the kind of diversity that accompanies real life. And anyone who has read Dudley Pope's "Ramage" series knows that reading about the guy who has the most dangerous job on earth never gets hurt, never misses the kiss the with the girl, and never always escapes punishment, can get pretty tiring. In this series Dewey Lambdin (author) introduces us to Alan Lewrie; a young man who is intelligent but limits his own successes through a series of very human mistakes that any young person would make.

For the first time since I finished the Master and Commander series I actually feel as I'm reading a novel about a person and not some overly-virtuous and indestructible demigod (like Ramage, Hornblower, and too many other fictional characters). And I am truly enjoying this read!

The only detracting thing about this series would be that if I had young children I may not let them read it because there is a small amount of sexual content that may not be suitable for small kids. Fortunately I'm an adult and can enjoy the amazing prose that Dewey Lambdin brings us!

Tom Jones Still at Sea
By Amazon Customer
Good storytelling on multiple levels. Still a bit too much "Tom Jones Goes to Sea" but improving after the first book: The King's Coat. Interesting examination of American Revolutionary events from a Torry point-of-view. Excellent sailing detail without allowing nomenclature to replace story. Overly involved in details of local geography and historic weaponry. Treatment of female characters, while probably true to the period, is outrageous to the modern mode. Mayhaps a strong woman character will emerge along with the mysterious French Admiral who appears only in reference. Hints on both fronts abound. Hooked on series.

The author continues the story in the second novel of the series with the main character's involvement in the battle of Yorktown. The author does a magnificent job at recreating history of the battle and detailing the accurate geography of the areas he refers to. He also stays true to the history of the weapons and strategies of war employed during this time period.

How Markets Fail: The Logic Of Economic Calamities, by John Cassidy

How Markets Fail offers a new, enlightening way to understand the force of the irrational in our volatile global economy. Why do many people contribute generously to charity but fail to save for their own retirement? What is the economic answer to global warming? Using fascinating new insights from behavioural economics, and vivid contemporary and historical examples, Cassidy explains that individual behavioural biases and kinks—such as overconfidence, envy, and a sense of altruism and fairness—all help us understand the world in ways that rational-choice economics does not. This is the book that explains both the current moment and such past and future moments. We will continue to get things wrong. But at least now we will be having the right conversation.

From Publishers Weekly
Market disasters—and the cycle of delusions responsible—receive lively, engaging analysis by Cassidy (Dot.con), a journalist at the New Yorker. The author focuses primarily on the rise and fall of free market ideology and the mostly unrealistic ideal of a self-correcting marketplace. An excellent comprehensive history of the economic thought that led to this kind of utopian economics provides a refresher course in Adam Smith, Friedrich August von Hayek, Kenneth Arrow and Hyman Minsky. Both a narrative and a call to arms, the book provides an intellectual and historical context for the string of denial and bad decisions that led to the disastrous illusion of harmony, the lure of real estate and the Great Crunch of 2008. Using psychology and behavioral economics, Cassidy presents an excellent argument that the market is not in fact self-correcting, and that only a return to reality-based economics—and a reform-minded move to shove Wall Street in that direction—can pull us out of the mess in which we've found ourselves. From Booklist
Cassidy, economist and journalist, launches a theoretical attack on Milton Friedman and the Chicago school’s free market concepts, calling them Utopian Economics, which Cassidy explains in part one. The author describes his replacement theories in part two, which give market failure a central role, calling them Reality-Based Economics. Drawing on both approaches, in part three he explains in detail his analysis of the financial crisis of 2007–2009, indicating that the subprime boom was a failure of capitalism and the financial crisis was the consequence on decisions made by private firms under deregulation. He concludes with suggestions including banks that create and distribute mortgage securities should be forced to keep approximately one-fifth on their books and federal regulators should have oversight responsibility for mortgage bankers and lenders. Everyone will not agree with the author’s theories, and although he denies this is a textbook, it will stir controversy within and outside the classroom. However, the challenging material in this book will limit its appeal to many library patrons. --Mary Whaley

Review

Praise for How Markets Fail

“Cassidy clearly knows a great deal of economics, and he tells his story extremely well . . . Many of his chapters—on the development of general equilibrium theory (how everything in the economy systematically depends on everything else), for example, or marginalism (why prices are determined by what we’re prepared to pay for the very last item of something we buy, rather than what the whole amount is worth to us)—would make useful supplementary reading in an undergraduate economics course.” —Benjamin M. Friedman, The New York Review of Books

“[A] wonderful book . . . The most concise and elegantly written account, among the many that have come out, of how we got into this mess.” —Liaquat Ahamed, The National Interest

“[How Markets Fail] brilliantly dissects much of what has passed for economic wisdom, and decries the lack of humility from those whose theories helped cause the disaster.” —Floyd Norris, The New York Times

“Highly readable . . . Cassidy offers a clear and occasionally colorful exposition of the evolution of relevant economic thought in a way that is accessible to non-economists.” —Richard N. Cooper, Foreign Affairs

“Fascinating and important.” —Eliot Spitzer, Slate

“An admirably lucid account of how ‘utopian economics’ drove us to disaster . . . This is a compelling synthesis that derives most of its narrative energy from the author’s clarity of thought and exposition.” —James Pressley, Bloomberg.com

“An essential, grittily intellectual, yet compelling guide to the financial debacle of 2009.” —Geordie Greig, London Evening Standard

“The last major attempt of 2009 to make sense of what has become of the discipline of economics.” —Stefan Stern, Financial Times (Best Books of the Year)

“A well constructed, thoughtful and cogent account of how capitalism evolved to its current form.” —Edmund Conway, The Daily Telegraph

“[How Markets Fail] is more than just an account of the failures of regulators and the self-deception of bankers and homebuyers, although these are well covered. For Mr. Cassidy, the deeper roots of the crisis lie in the enduring appeal of an idea: that society is always best served when individuals are left to pursue their self-interest in free markets . . . An ambitious book, and one that mostly succeeds.” —The Economist

“An ambitious, nuanced work that brings ideas alive . . . Cassidy makes a compelling case that a return to hands-off economics would be a disaster.”—Chris Farrell, BusinessWeek

“Brilliant.” —Paul M. Barrett, New York Times Book Review

“Both a narrative and a call to arms, [How Markets Fail] provides an intellectual and historical context for the string of denial and bad decisions that led to the disastrous ‘illusion of harmony,’ the lure of real estate and the Great Crunch of 2008. Using psychology and behavioral economics, Cassidy presents an excellent argument that the market is not in fact self-correcting, and that only a return to reality-based economics—and a reform-minded move to shove Wall Street in that direction—can pull us out of the mess in which we’ve found ourselves.” —Publishers Weekly

“An elegant, readable treatise on economics, swathed in current headlines . . . Cassidy delivers on the promise of his title, but he also offers a clear-eyed look at economic thinking over the last three centuries, from Adam Smith to Ben Bernanke, and shows how the major theories have played out in practice, often not well . . . Cassidy writes with terrific clarity and a finely tuned sense of moral outrage, yielding a superb book.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The new economics - market failure as a major descriptor
By tim
As a professional economist this book is a seminal discussion of where economics ought to be taught. The old 'micro and macro' approach should no longer be taught. I believe that the teaching of the subject should be divided into three parts (like Gaul):
1. A prelimiary discussion of the philisophy of economics and the meaning of market economics, starting with Adam Smith with his discussion of productivity and the division of labor, the invisible hand and so on, through to Jevons, with his putting supply and demand together to get prices, and Walras to get the interrelationships in the market.
2. A discussion of standard price theory, cost curves, etc, etc,. How the theory all fits together.
3. And the major new part - Market failure. Starting with Keynes, and his somewhat confused explanation of market failure in the labor market, through Minsky with his discussion of market failure in the financial market, to everything covered by this excellent book.

That is the new economics. That is the way to go.

A Great Book on What Can Go Wrong With Otherwise Superior Free Markets
By Todd Carlsen
This book shows the cold hard facts of how a free market system can fail due to certain behaviors. It's an economics history lesson showing the situations where free markets fail and the "rational" behaviors that lead to that irrational outcome, and the book debunks the Utopian myth that free markets will always self-correct and never fail. The book explains what behaviors should not be allowed that can cause the economy to collapse.

It first explains the Utopian delusion that complete laissez faire markets always works. Then it explains a much better economic framework that the author calls "reality-based economics." Then the book explains what happened economically with the economic collapse of 2008, the worst since the Great Depression. This is a great book to understand the economic collapse of 2008. More important, it explains the underlying economic dynamics at work in history to show how laissez faire is a big mistake that can bring down our global economy, and there is a better way through sensible safeguards. The author seems to know economics extremely well and can explain this information in a way that does not make your head spin.

The Wall Street Journal called this book "a marvelous book."

The Economist called this book "Shrewd and entertaining... Thoroughly persuasive."

I want to emphasize that this books is NOT an overall attack on capitalism in favor of socialism or another order. He is simply explaining the instances when free markets failed and what behaviors need to be banned to make free markets work better. He does strongly disagree with those who argue for complete laissez faire policies (advocating no rules and that markets will always self-correct).

The philosophy of laissez faire is a Utopian delusion. The facts of economic history show that laissez faire has led to market disasters, and the author presents a convincing case that certain behaviors that are rational to one person are irrational to the economy as a whole and will bring down the economy. It's like if one person leaves a football game at a big stadium in the middle of the game it does not matter, but if everyone tries to leave, you have a problem. If one person withdraws his savings from a bank it does not matter. If everyone does in a bank run, the bank will fail. If one bank fails it's not a big deal. If huge parts of the financial system collapse, lending and money flow seizes up and contracts, bringing down everything. Some risk taking behavior can be damaging to the economy, and then when that happens markets will not always self-correct.

This book gives suggestions for what the author calls reality-based markets.

The weakness of this book is that it could have explained more about past economic history, especially the Great Depression. It does not say enough about what we learned from the Great Depression and what worked (and did not work) with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal as far as creating decades of STABLE prosperity built upon the economic safeguards of the New Deal.

For example, originally, Franklin Roosevelt created the FHA to create modern 30 year mortgages that brought home ownership to millions for the first time. FDR gave home ownerships to millions, fueling the great post-war boom. The FHA back then required that borrowers show their credit worthiness, imposed lending rules, and required a certain amount of down payment (I think it was 20%) so people could not buy mortgages they could not afford and could not handle. Government back then with the New Deal was strict about financial security and worked to ensure the basic economic security of America. That era of post-war prosperity, built on the New Deal, was stable and not overly-speculative. The New Deal was designed to save and strengthen capitalism with pragmatic rules, and decades of stable middle class prosperity followed.

Then decades later when Bush Jr was president, some numb-skulls (certain members of congress, the ownership society president, and lobbyists) decided to make Fannie and Freddie give loans to people who could not handle them. Regulations were relaxed and liar loans were allowed where you did not even have to prove your income. Mortgage insurance secured this house of cards. Like climbers going up a mountain chained together, when the liar loans and mortgage-backed securities went bust, all the climbers fell together from the mountain. It seems that everyone had totally forgot about what happened to the financial system during the Great Depression.
I think people should go back and look at the parts of the New Deal that worked well, such as FDIC to insure bank deposits and forever end bank runs, SEC to require audited financial statements and securities regulation for information disclosure and bad fraud, FHA, Glass-Stegal Act to put firewalls in the financial system, the constant fiscal stimulus of social security when private sector spending plunges, and the clear understanding in society and government that extreme risk taking for for profit could bring down the economy and extreme risk was not allowed.

I want to concur with the review written by Mark V Anderson below. Yes, some self-interested behaviors in a free market system can cause the economic system to collapse and those behaviors should be banned. However, overall free markets (with sensible rules enforced fairly by referees) are better than communism or socialism or fascism or anything else. Also, governments can make mistakes.

We do need government to ban certain bad behaviors and extreme greed at the expense of those who work hard and play by the rules, but let's not only point the finger at what can go wrong with free markets. Free markets work best with sensible rules. Ronald Reagan was a New Dealer but then said that government went off track since then. Also, Reagan wrote in his autobiography that he supported a basic safety net for the elderly, disabled and orphans, but not the explosion in the cost and ineffectiveness of welfare.

There are four other books I would also recommend along with this book for a fuller picture:

1. Stabilizing an Unstable Economy. This is a landmark economics book explaining how a free market economy can become unstable and then how to stabilize it.
2. Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World. This book won the Pulitzer Prize.
3. John Maynard Keynes. This debunks some myths about Keynes's general theory, explaining how Keynes showed that capitalism is unstable and what to do about it. Later Keynesian policies espoused by other were never articulated in Keynes General theory.
4. Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism. Capitalist countries, including USA, Japan, Korea, and many others, have become prosperous through big government economic investments and protections of economics interests (not pure free markets).

Financial Wake-Up Call
By Jack Bob
This was a thoroughly engaging read that clearly explained the many factors that led to the financial collapse.

While I would recommend reading with easy access to the internet to look up unfamiliar terms, for the most part the book explains how things like Credit Default Swaps and Collateralized Mortgage Securities work without going into the byzantine details of exactly how these products are created and marketed, since only general concepts of how they work are required for understanding. However, if you are curious are all the acronyms that are tossed around when dealing with the financial collapse, this is a good place to start.

Book is split up into three parts: a brief overview of the historical underpinnings of free market economics, an academic critique of some of some of the assumptions about markets, and a detailed set up of how the financial collapse was in part caused by the prevailing view of the market which ignored earlier academic critiques.
