The De Soto expedition was the first major encounter of Europeans with North American Indians in the eastern half of the United States. For anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians the surviving De Soto chronicles are valued for the unique ethnological information they contain. About the Author
Lawrence A. Clayton attended Duke University (BA, 1964) and earned his MA (1969) and PhD (1972) at Tulane University in Latin American History. From 1964 1966 he served as an officer in the US Navy on the USS Donner (LSD-20), cruising both in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet. He was on the faculty of the University of Alabama from 1972 2013, before retiring in 2013. His specialties focused on Latin American history and the history of the Christian church, and he directed the Latin American Studies Program (1980 1992), and acted as Chair of the Department of History (2000 2007) and Interim Chair (2009 2010). He also held two Senior Fulbright Lecturing Awards, one in 1983 to Costa Rica, and one in 1988 to Peru, lecturing at the University of Costa Rica and the University of Lima respectively. In 1983 he served as President of the South Eastern Council on Latin American Studies, and in 1999 held a year-long Pew Evangelical Scholars Fellowship. His publications include Alabama and the Borderlands: From Prehistory to Statehood (1985), Grace: W. R. Grace and Co., The Formative Years, 1850 1930 (1985), The Hispanic Experience in North America: Sources for Study in the United States (1992), The DeSoto Chronicles (1993, prize-winning), A History of Modern Latin America (2nd edition, 2005), Peru and the United States: The Condor and the Eagle (1999) and Bartolome de las Casas and the Conquest of the Americas (2011). Three of his books have been translated and published in Peru and Ecuador. He is presently engaged in writing a book, The Battle for Cuba: Air War over the Bay of Pigs, April 1961, and is working on the script to a new movie on the Doolittle R.

Volume II: De Soto chronicle La Florida is second to Diaz

This work is a complete collection of chronicles for the De Soto expedition into La Florida (which is most of the south-east USA). Due to the fact that this work comprises two volumes of almost 600 pages each, I have so far only read volume II which is the complete account "La Florida" by Garcilaso de la Vega. Following others (including the Narvaez expedition that de Vaca relates) De Soto went into Florida to find gold and eventually settle the new land. Garcilaso used one captain from the expedition as his source and is a great storyteller, claiming his abhorrence of exaggerating the contents, much of it is told with the heroic chivalry and noble virtue of the times, whether speaking of Spaniards or Indians, and always some purposeful enthusiasm. If all you know of De Soto is that he was the first to see the Mississippi, that doesn't begin to say anything about what happens during the expedition, and even to the way those who were on it considered it afterwards. It shows also the real nature of the natives, showing great differences in their treatment of the Spanish, their use of slavery, and the brutatilty they showed towards other tribes. (Not as placid as Las Casas would have you believe). Also describing the native cultures and life-styles to some degree. All wonderful and interesting stories. The volumes contain some maps and black and white illustrations. Volume I contains all the other existant accounts including the more historical one by the Gentleman of Elvas. Well worth the price.

These books are recent translations of the four major accounts of the De Soto expedition - the Gentleman of Elvas, Luys Hernandez de Biedma, Rodrigo Ranjel, and Garcilaso de la Vega, based on the account of the soldier Gonzalo Silvestre. They also include translations of a number of documents related to the expedition and its members.

The books represent a badly needed update of the older translations by Buckingham Smith. They give us a picture of a world of Native American societies with tens or hundreds of thousands of people, ruled by nobles and leaders in ranked hierarchies through ceremony, ritual and belief. And they represent our last real glimpse of these societies at the beginning of the end - before disease, warfare with Europeans, and the shattering effects of De Soto's entrada destroyed the most powerful and complex cultures north of Mesoamerica.

Archaeologist, historian, and ordinary reader alike will find these books fascinating and important.

Where was XLIFF when I needed it?

I remember the pain of pre-XLIFF days. I handed off my carefully formatted technical documents to a translation vendor, then I waited waited waited while the translators (working as fast as they could) extracted the text from my documents, put the English text into a form that translators could handle, sent that text out to be transformed into some number of languages, then forwarded all the translated text over to a desktop-publishing expert to reformat everything. Let's not even talk about what it took to translate the text inside graphics. Finally finally finally, the translated documents looked more or less like the originals.

Oh, the delays. Oh, the costs.

When XML came along into the lives of many technical writers, it took some of the inefficiency out of the formatting and reformatting. But it wasn't until XLIFF was developed—thanks to this book's authors, Bryan Schnabel, Rocolfo Raya, and JoAnn Hackos—that the translation part of the workflow could be truly automated.

I wish XLIFF had been around back when I was handing off my docs and then waiting, waiting, waiting...

This is an Excellent book for DSP Engineers and Protocol Stack Developers for WCDMA. It gives very good understanding on WCDMA.I would also recommend another book " WCDMA Design Handbook " by Richardson. Use both of them.

Love this series!

I enjoy reading series such as the ones that Author Steph Nuss writes. The Love in the City series can each be read as standalones. I do recommend reading each in order because you can easily get hooked onto them. You still get to see the main characters from the previous books since they are a close knit circle of friends/family.

In this novel, we do get to know Bayler and Fletcher a bit more. The two are very similar when it comes to their dedication to their volunteer work. They are also alike when it comes to dating. Bayler and Fletcher can attract anyone, but won't be serious or even spend another evening with anyone. When these two see one another again, they really haven't forgotten about one another.

There definitely isn't a lack of hot moments between these two. They also seem to be breaking some of those dating rules of being serious about someone. Thing is though, with that tight knit group of friends/family they are a part of, they don't have a clue of what is going on between Bayler and Fletcher. It's all secret, fun and very sneaky!

You kinda get a hint of what and who the next couple for the future novel could be. There is also some news at the very end that could be considered a cliffhanger? Now Steph needs to hurry with the next novel!

Another great addition to the Love in the City Series

I've had the pleasure of receiving an ARC for honest review.

Steph Nuss next edition into the Love In The City Series once again was a incredible love story between Fletcher and Bayler.

The story of two people with lives that do not reflect the journey their friends are going down, life is more easy with no complicated relationship and heartbreak getting in the way!
When their lives cross they soon realise that they both want each other with no strings attached which fits perfectly. With an secret agreement they enjoy each other's pleasure with no drama!

As the story unfolds they soon realise that they both have similar interests. Steph always in her books captures real life situations that brings such emotion and compassion to her stories. Especially with the story featuring the Big Brother, Big Sister organisation in which both Bayler and fletcher donate their time towards.

As time rolls on by, their world gets shaken, enjoyed but also feelings they both avoided in the past, start to evolve.

I thoroughly enjoyed their story as I loved Fletcher in the previous books in the series. I couldn't put this book down until THE END was read leaving us wanting so much more!
